Yep, time for a run to Jefferies - haven't been there for a month or so. Did you guys see the nice writeup on them in the News Sentinal a week or so ago?

Looks a lot like pau ferro, morado to me.

Hard to tell, but looks like it has some decent sized pores. If so, that would rule out pau ferro which has really little ones. It definitely looks like pau ferro's color and grain though.

Thanks Chris, and yep, it's from film4! Think I would be ok to go ahead and make some handles for my hand planes or still too risky?

You can cut your handles oversize and then work them down when they are dry.

Okay, that just isn't fair. [uncle]

Ken & Lex, thanks for the replies. Maybe the picture doen't do it justice as it actually has very tight pores. Im not too bad at identifying local wood but have no idea what this is.

So Tim, you just keep stealing cars around until you find wood stored in them?

Alain,

The funny one was when the DEA raided the house across the street from my shop. No more brownies for the homeless. I really gave those guys a hard time about the letters stenciled across the back of their jackets as they were loading up....no pun intended.

Here is a link to the Jeffries article:
http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2012/jan/02/knoxville-shop-is-a-lumber-heaven/
My last acquisitions from there have been QS Honduran RW wide enough for two-piece backs, and some curly olivewood.
I will post photos later.

Why, Africa of course :)

Actually I'll probably put a set or two up in the classifieds when it comes time to clear out some extra wood...

What is it? I don't know for sure.....but am open to suggestions.
It's different colors of brown and some pinks in there, smells really good when sanded.
Some might say it smells like bubble gum, others like a pretty woman...

We don't have a lot of back, side and neck wood in my part of the world. There are an awful lot of trees around here that look like this when you open them up.

One of my buddies showed up at my door with this pile.

You can see from the outside of the tree that there is some good wood but you never know how good till you get it on the band saw. This one would be the [:Y:] [:Y:] . Premium Big Leaf Maple.

Time to think a little more about building that archtop!

Photos of the last Jeffries purchases.

Honduran RW. Not the best color, but it is fully quartered. The sapwood can be trimmed off, or used for contrast.

Curly olivewood. This is my first experience with this species. I always knew it was hard and dense, but it is more like ebony than I expected. Feels cold to the touch.

Thanks Darryl, yes I'm pretty happy to have found it - it should clean up pretty nicely:) The plank I got is about 11 1/2' long, 1/2" thick, and looks to have nice consistent figure throughout, so should be good for a few nice sets:) Unfortunately it's only about 7 3/4 to 7 7/8" wide with rough edges, so not quite full size ... hoping to squeeze OM size from it.....

The QS stuff I got doesn't look to have any figure but is some lovely old stock, nice & straight, a comfortable 12" wide quartered all the way across, and plenty of it!

Al, where did you find it? Was it local? I'm off to Exotic Woods tomorrow in search of bits & pieces for my challenge build, and anything else that looks interesting.

Hi Alex - I bought it from a retiring woodworker .... he bought it a long time ago as part of a larger haul & didn't get around to using all of it. Not cheap, but very nice. From Whitby you might also try a shorter drive to Century Mill Lumber in Stouffeville if you haven't checked it out yet. I haven't been up there yet but have heard good things. Have been out to exotic woods a while ago & it is pretty cool to be sure, they have a lutherie section that has plenty of cool stuff [:Y:]
