I bent sides this week for a Cocobolo Dreadnought and a Bloodwood OM sized Wedge and glued up the rim for the Wedge yesterday. This morning I sanded the Bloodwood sides for the wedge to shape and will glue on the kerf linings later today. I have not been real busy in the shop for a few weeks, I was taking a bit of a rest before starting the new builds and running my wife around for medical appointments. Her problems with Rheumatoid arthritis really cuts into my shop time, next surgery will be replacement or 4 knuckles on her left hand.

I'm working on an Arts & Crafts style kitchen for my wife. Once it is done, I don't think my wife will give me too much grief about doing some guitar building! bliss

Made the bridge, finished fretboard prep, and started fretting the neck for the Tenor... Next will be to set the bridge - and then make up a nut and saddle.....

This is almost 2-years since I started it...

Thanks

Just closed the box on this Euro / madrose guitar. Plus a few repairs, as usual.

Dang. That's a lot of work... Gives me an idea of what a busy luthier does. I've been finishing up fret leveling and set up on my top replacement. Seems I set the neck back a hair too much and had to battle a fret extension hump. Doah! Persistence is paying off and I finally got the strings to ring free after shimming up the bridge a bit and sanding down an area where I removed frets... I'm learning. [headinwall]

A very exciting week, finished the guild repair:

Got a build started today. This will be my demo guitar. I am starting by cutting the scarf joint, but due to the fact that my band saw is doing weird things, I had to remove a lot of wood to get it to fit.

I am going for a flush mounted bolt on neck this time. with any luck it will be a lot easier than mortise and tenon.

I think that it's better to put head part of neck joint under the neck (not as you did on pic on the neck)..

what other say?

I thought it is better to put the joint under the fingerboard rather than the headplate... I will have a volute so it should reinforce the joint.

WOW those knobs are spectacular as is all the work posted here. I tuned up my band saw this weekend and did a lot of mountain biking. The weather was amazing here in Virginia. That and did a lot of Flamenco playing on my new personal and first Flamenco guitar.

Nah I'm more of a standard tuning guy :) Tell ya what though putting new tires on band saw wheels is not ever going on my list of fun things to do.

I do it the other way too. You will see the line of your joint along the neck the way you've done it. Doing the scarf the other way, you only see the line either at the back of the headstock and along the side of the headstock. As far as strength goes, I also think it better to make the joint at the headstock as there is more surface area remaining and less stress on the joint (the neck will bow somewhat due to string tension).

Beautiful work by everyone [clap]

I sprayed the first two coats of Nitro on my first full sized guitar.
It's been well over a year since I started, I hope to finish sometime around Christmas.

Machined up a custom Fretboard on my CNC machine - first one with "real" wood and it came out pretty good I think.

The ebony one is the "real" one.

About all I got done was adjusting the string height at the nut on an older Japanese dread, and replacing the pins with ebony. The thing that made the nut tricky was that it was brass. It took 2-3 times that a bone nut would have, partly because I felt I really didn't have room for a single error. I can't repair or replace brass the way I could bone.

I also made a string height gauge (loosely based on StewMac's), with ideas that I borrowed from several sources. While I was at it, I made interchangeable bases for it, one for guitar, and one for bass.

Tai Fu wrote:

No, please don't trash it! I have had two electric guitars (one of which I built) with necks made the way you have yours set up, and have not had a single problem whatsoever. Having said that, the other scarf joints I have made have all been the other way, because I like it better for Rod's reasons, and also, I always use a headstock veneer anyways. (You don't *have* to use a veneer the way you have yours, because there is no joint to cover.) Keeping in mind that the string tension on my guitars is a lot less than what yours will see, I would keep on going.

The reason I used that type of joint is because I saw that Warmoth used that kind of joint so I thought it would be superior.

But I guess anything is better than the one piece, head truss rod adjustment, and no volute... I was just thinking the joint would be covered by the fingerboard, and reinforced with an epoxied in steel truss rod ( I use the Martin style U channel truss rod, I really like it, and it's cheap)

Well, the joint will show the along the back of the neck.....It's your guitar but if it were mine and I was selling it for money, I would not use it, unless you're going to heavy burst/black the neck.
