I'm new to hide glue use and I was wondering if it's OK to use on bracing laminated with carbon fibre? I've read that hide glue was used in glass etching so it must adhere to surfaces other than wood.
Thoughts?

I was wondering that too, thinking about trying out laminating braces with a CF center strip. From my tests, hide, white, and yellow glues don't stick to carbon fiber well at all. I'd rather not have to do all my bracing with epoxy, but it looks like that might be the only real option. I guess it's kind of nice that it has no water, so you don't get brace impressions in very thin plates. But hide is so much more pleasant to work with.

Then again, if the braces are laminated with epoxy, and then glued to the plate with hide, the wood should technically hold the CF in place, even if the CF-to-plate bond is weak. But I wonder if you're giving up some of the creep resistance that way, which is the whole point of the CF...

Have used system 3 epoxy to put in CF rod in neck. Never tried hide glue . Would experiment first on scrap

I understand it's much more efficient to "cap" braces with CF rather than use CF laminations between spruce.
Unless you are using the CF for other reasons than stiffness/weight ratio of course.

As to what glue to use, I defer to someone with more experience, I had to look for a bit of clarification myself today -

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
