From a piece of wenge .. its cheap. Seriously, make your own. If you were closer I would just give you a chunk ....

Thanks all...
So I grabbed a chunk of wenge and had at it. It seems wierd a bit to rip into a piece that would be good for three sets of sides (2"x6.5"x36") but I gues it's gotta come from somewhere right? I estimate I should get at least 100 pieces out of it, if not more... I suspect 32.99 BF to be a bit high though. What do you pay for wenge?

Hi-

I haven't bought any exotic hardwoods in lumber form for over 6 years, but here in Atlanta I was paying $6-9 BF for quartered Wenge, a bit more for quartered Honduran mahogany and $13-19 BF for nice Cocobolo. That was at Peach State lumber and I'm sure the prices have gone up a bit but certainly not to the $33 BF price for Wenge. That seems a bit high.

I just did a google search and the going rate for 8/4 quartered Wenge runs from $13.50 - 22.00 BF. The price varies widely by area. You overpaid a bit, but $1.00 a binding strip is doing pretty good. I figure you paid $110+ and you will get roughly 100 pieces. If it were me, I would sell enough extra binding sets to offset the cost of the original board. That way you have free wenge binding strips.

Yeah, I figured I was overpaying. I doubt Windsor Plywood is the smart hardwood shoppers choice, but hey, it was there...I also noticed piles of somebody else's dud fingerboard blanks...

I pay around $16/bf but you have to find a piece of qtr sawn in the stack assuming there is one. Go away empty handed a lot.

Even at twice that it's not bad compared to what you pay for a set.

Yeah, especially as upon measuring, I think I should yield closer to 200 pcs, depending on how much I cut off for purflings...So, 107$ for wenge, 30$ for a roll of birch veneer, 60$ for a Freud rip blade, so a buck a strip with purfling. Most tolerable, even with the extra work involved...
