Hey, I just bought a gallon of paint thinner,
and it smells like Windex,
and says it's made WITH mineral spirits.
I asked a guy at the paint store what's up wit dat?,
and he said it's the new formula from now on.
It cleans brushes nicely,
but how would it act as a varnish thinner?
He said all the thinners are changing the formula,
naptha too, eventually.
Is this just in CA, or has anyone else come across this?

Bought some mineral spirits a while back, new environmentally friendly formula. Smelled kinda like thinner, looked like watered down white glue. cleaned brushes and equip sorta OK, but the stuff refuses to evaporate. Useless for wiping down work or general shop clean up. I wouldn't even think of using it to thin coatings despite what the label said. Now I buy my mineral spirits from my local Sherwin-Williams store. Costs a bit more but it is the same old product, one that I can use.

Don't know what you are useing it for, but if it's wet sanding and it doesn't evaporate you could be in real trouble there. :o Thanks for the warning, i'll make sure i stay clear of that stuff!

I'm afraid we won't be able to get the real stuff in the future.
I'm going to stock up,
if I can find it.

I've seen "odourless" paint thinner at Canadian Tire. Maybe this is the same as the one that smells like Windex. I'm pretty sure I saw a similar product at Home Depot. If this is the future, stocking up is definitely a good idea.
