Post subject: A gift from my Brother
PostPosted: Tue Jul 19, 2011 5:53 pm
My Brother stopped by today and gave me this, he picked it from an old barn.
It's 8/4 X 11" at it's widest and 5' long, It looks to be flat sawn.

Claro walnut, perhaps? Sand it a bit and give it a whiff.

Not sure what to do with it... maybe a little squirrely for acoustics, aside from decorative things (headplates, rosettes, etc.). If you build electrics, you can get a lot of nice carve tops.

I've built many a guitar from barn finds. In fact I still have probably 30 guitars worth of Imbuia I scored from a barn in Indiana. Cherry, Walnut seem to be popular barn finds. I have a barn in my back yard that's about 80 years old and fallen down. The planks are Oak and I've built a few electric guitars and furniture out of :)

The piece you have looks dark, any idea what it might be?

I'm sorry too Scott, for my remark.
Get a little closer picture, maybe sand or scrape a clean section, and I promise to give it a better try with identification.
Where are you? The part of the country the barn was in could give an indication of what kind of wood may have been used. Lots of times old barns were built with local trees.
