I e-mailed PegHeds a few weeks ago but haven't got a reply. I wanted to know what the maximum load is. Can it handle steel-strings on a parlor sized guitar or harp-style guitar?

I know it can do flamenco, though. Thanks.

I have only used them for Flamenco guitars and like them alot but have not tried them with steel strings. That being said, the side load shouldnt be a problem other than the fact that it will put alot of stress on the shaft.

In general a better solution for a steel string (other than the looks of a peghed), if you are building a guitar with a small head is to use a planetary gear tuner such as is used for banjos. When I am fixing up a tenor guitar that I am going to play but that doesnt have collectors value, I will usually replace the old tuners with planetary tuners as they are more robust and are very easy to quickly tune on a small head.

Best is to contact Chuck Herin by phone, express your concerns and ask questions. Toll Free: 1 866 PEGHEDS (1 866 734 4337). He makes and distributes his invention, he also answers the phone. He is quite a personable guy too.
Pegheds are not made out of plastic but aluminium if I recall. I know the 16:1 certainly take steel string tension, I see no reason to think the 4:1 wouldn't. But, better to ask.

Just a rumor, but I heard they were really backed up with an order from Collings for Uke tuners.

Last time I ordered from Chuck a few months ago it didn't take 2 weeks for the tuners to arrive in the mail.

I wasnt concerned about stress on the shaft as in wear since they are aluminum but rather on the mechanism within the shaft. I dont know if it is a bearing or what type of interconnect within the shaft.

Planetary gears, the 16:1 have 2 sets in series to achieve the ratio. It's explicit on the website. Talk to Chuck…

Going through the same thing re: no returns on both e-mails and phone calls. Always makes me nervous about a company that doesn't care whether it sells you something or not.

Happened to me too. They are not exactly a small retail type of thing, although I'd have liked that stated on the website. In the end I had to bother Mike Collins help me out get the pegs :(
