Wow, there is some absolutely incredible work going on out there. Burton, those buttons are awesome. Ken, that rosette is also incredble. Inspiring work you guys. I just got my #8 strung up.

I love that look . Were those holes in the wood or is that "made to look " that way [:Y:]

Thanks Jim, the holes are from the Teredo worm, aka shipworm. The spruce was a floatlog from an alaskan float camp which left the under half of the log susceptible to shipworm damage. I was lucky enough to come by a couple sets of this from alaska specialty wood a few years back.

I am of course curious as to how many sales were made (and who made them).
I've often felt that the vendor fair at the GFA becomes sort of free entertainment for the attendees who seem far more absorbed in the competitions, classes and concerts.

Its not just GFA, but a lot of shows are like that. There is a very large music festival happening here next weekend, that I used to exhibit at my canoes & paddles not guitars). I have since stopped showing there for reasons like above. Vendors have to pay a hefty sum to exhibit, work hard for a month or two prior to the show in order to have work in place for show or speculative sale, work hard throughout the show to present their work, and are treated as entertainment by show attendees.

When the musicians have to pay an exhibition fee to play at festivals maybe I'll reconsider.

Since I started this hobby one of the ways I keep " momma " happy is by doing restores , repairs on older stuff so that she can make it part of her decor around the house . It started with an old bowl back that I fixed and is now on a shelf in the hallway , the headstock laying against a flower planter that has a clock in the front of it . Looks nice .

Any way , she found an old Oscar Schmidtt autoharp for $35.00 at a antique store , the back was falling off , the end plate that holds the strings was bent way over and the bracing was about to fall out . It was rough . So after about 4 hrs of work and some hyde glue and preservation polish she has to decide now where in her house decor its gonna be .

Hey Doug, Here's another view of the GFA vendor fair from one of the music vendors who was at two of three I attended as well as this most recent one.

http://matanya.livejournal.com/121274.html#cutid1

He has a point about guitar makers, though if you are not lucky enough to sell that "$5000." guitar you will not recoup a dime of your expenses.
Fortunately, most of us are not jaded enough to see no benefit at all in attending one of these. I've received (as I'm sure Waddy did) tons of valuable feedback on my guitars as well as enjoyed meeting other makers (most of them) and of course there is the music and lessons if playing is also an interest.
I hope to get to these in the future if possible.

I'm getting started on a Flemenco guitar and finishing up an electric.

Thanks for the link, David. I am glad, or sad, to see that my experience is not unique.

There are indeed other benefits to exhibiting at a something like GFA, but one has to have that in mind going in.
