Gene, I dropped by Larry's shop several times when your guitar was being built.
Love the eagle. Larry's a great inlay artist and he makes a great sounding Guitar.

I'm have a get together at my shop on July 9th, you should come by!

I will put in my vote as well.... Oak is a fabulous wood for Guitars...

I built an Oak Ditson size 1 - and the Oak really gave it that old "Mississippi Delta Blues" guitar sort of sound.. Very John Lee Hooker-ish.. It's hard to describe, except you know exactly the sound I am talking about when a slide touches the strings.....

As a couple others here have mentioned... Oak bends like a dream.... You can use sides that are unbelievably thick... and they flop onto the form when you get that Oak hot and wet..... The Ditson's sides were 1/8" thick.... I probably could have gone 3/16" if I wanted to without any bending trouble.....

On the pore filling.. You don't have to if you don't want to... Just be prepared to see pock marks everywhere..... Red Oak can be real trouble with a very easy flowing finish like Shellac or Lacquer - as the pores are so large and thru-porous that the finish literally flows completely through the wood from the outside and can actually drip all over the inside of the guitar! A varnish finish won't flow all the way through, but it takes lots of coats to fill up all hose huge holes!

Thanks

I read a discussion about oak once that said oak moves too much. Have you had trouble with that? I think they are nice looking, if I can get past thinking they look like fine furniture.

Not when it is quartered.

QS white oak has about twice the movement due to changes in MC that you'd see in QS mahogany or rosewood. Another way to look at it is that QS white oak moves about 1/3 again as much as flatsawn mahogany and about as much as flatsawn EIR. All that aside, movement of white oak due to MC is pretty close to sugar maple, and it's a commonly used B/S wood.

Is that movement across the grain or in thickness? I have used alot of quarter sawn red oak for cabinetry, and found little movement across the width of a board, although a back and sides of a guitar are much thinner than a table top and will change MC more readily.
