Hi everyone,

After about one year and a half I finally finished #1 - it plays beautifully and sounds great - I will post some sound clips once I get a chance to remind my fingers how to play. We just moved into an apartment for the summer, so I lost my shop space, (sold house), but will resume building again in our new house in the fall. I had to rush the setup and finishing (French polish, sort of) of this guitar.
Thanks to everyone here, notably, Waddy, Shane for the great wood, Todd Stock, and others who have helped along the way with your online advise !! This guitar was built from the Cumpiano/Natelson book, and tons of advise from this forum.

Critique welcome - as well as complements !

Maple back and sides, curly maple binding
Lutz spruce, and spruce braces
ebony fingerboard
ebony nut
E.I. Rosewood for the bridge, with bone saddle
walnut and cherry rosette
Spanish cedar neck with walnut headstock overlay

All wood cut from scratch with the exception of the fingerboard and bridge.

Bravo!! It's lovely. The maple is cool, looks like some bird's eye, so am I right that it's flat sawn?

Yup it has a little birdseye in it - yes it is flatsawn.

On a side note, is it common to use an ebony nut on a classical?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Steve - I see you're in Glen Burnie, welcome to the board! - I am in Hanover (Arundel Mills) now, then in the fall I will be in Ellicott City - just down 100. There are a few on this board from this area.

Next - Walnut and Cedar - will probably be ready with that one in early winter - starting (continuing) it in late Sept. I have the soundboard, backs and sides cut. Just need to brace it, and then put it all together.

Yeah, I'm with Alan, but lemme ratchet it up one notch--I love maple guitars.
We need to use it more, and help dispel the prejudice that it isn't a worthy tone wood (for guitars, anyway). I think it works wonderfully, and looks beautiful as well.

Say, what kind of tuners are those?

Thanks - maple is nice - and this is plain with a little bit of birds eye. Maple makes a great tonewood. Only issue is that some people that see it ask me "What color are you going to paint it" [headinwall]

Tuners - of the wall generic tuners .. from the bay...
