Thanks to everyone for making it a good time. Always like meeting fellow instrument builders. I really wasn't planing on giving a demo on the rosettes. I really didn't have every thing I would have liked to have to do a demo. Next time I will plan to do one if people want me to. It was a great day even if I didn't spend more that I probably should have on wood, but it sure is pretty.

By the way, It wasn't until we were packing up that I realized that Craig had brought all the stuff to demo how he made those awesome looking rosettes. I don't know if time ran short, he got shy or what, I do know I want to see the process next time!

Well YEAH !!!!! laughing6-hehe If I had known you wouldnt have got away . PLAN on it for next year !! [:Y:]

Everyone was so helpful and encouraging at the "Gathering" that you inspired me to build another jig. Quine and I have discussed the trials and tribulations of binding and I had fits with my first guitar doing it. I have tried to do it free hand, with palm router and still it looks like messy. I have wanted to build a stationary one like LMI sells. I got home and began looking around the shop and, with only one trip to Ace hardware, put this one together. It uses the pieces left over from a couple of table saw jigs I built a while back. Since someone complained about no pics, I will put up these to show what comes from meeting like this. LOL

(more jigs that take my time from building :D hey but that is half the fun sometimes) Now all I have to do is safe up for the bearing set.

Ken,

That resonator body looks familar. Nice binding jig. I think a spiral bit with an adjustable bearing base makes a lot of sense. Spiral bits are cheaper than the rabbiting set and one really only needs 2 setups, relative to the bearing, right?

It was nice talking to you Ken and I really appreciate your bringing the neck angle jig.

Danny,

It was so nice to meet you and admire your inlay work. I am going to try my hand at that soon so I may ask for more tips. :)

You are correct with the adjustable bearing and spiral bit. I tried a modification of that idea when using the trimmer freehand. It was basically a stop attachment that was connected to the base plate. It worked successfully at controlling the width of the cut. The downside was that I was still holding the trimmer in my hand and that was not quite as successfully for maintaining a stable cut. I used the new jig today with the only bearing and rabbeting bit set up I have and it made the best channel I have yet to do. I was very pleased.

I have seen your idea of the adjustable bearing but, as I see it, the biggest disadvantage of it over the rabbet and bearing sets is that you lose your concentric circles. Once the bearing is aconcentric (that may not be a real word but I like anyway) to the bit your channel width is no longer fixed. As you move the base (the guitar body is attached to this) it is very difficult to maintain the exact tangent point on the cutting spiral. As you change the bit contact point you also change the bearing contact and without concentricity (this is a real work/I looked it up) your cut depth is effected. Granted the closer your bearing diameter is to your bit diameter this becomes a mute point. While you could increase the cutting diameter of the bit and bearing, the 1/4 collett of most laminate trimmers limit your size. This is why I have decided to use the rabbet and bearing sets. No matter the tangent point of the spiral cut your depth is always the same. I have yet to see an adjustable bearing set up that I feel is as stable as the rabbeting bit. However, you have rekindled the idea and if you know of any binding jigs with adjustable bearings I would love to see them. I have always found (in my case that is) that two brains are always better than one. [:Y:]

Thanks for the input Danny and hope you have not been effected by the weather there today.

He may have had to deal with tornado damage . I will post some of the pics I have however the bulk of the Hibdon shots are on that guys camera .

If ANYONE remembers his name please let me know , Thanks !

Did you keep the name of attendees on the list? If so, we might could figure out the photographers name. He attended with another guy who had 2 guitars diplayed on the same table where mine was displayed.

Brett Dean is the guy who took the photos at the event I spoke to him this weekend and he informed me he would be emailing the photos to Jim here shortly. He had a few commitments last week with all the graduations etc, so look for the pics here shortly. By the way it was a pleasure meeting and talking to everyone at Hibdon's Hardwoods, I believe I am still punch drunk from browsing all the guitar sets. I hope this grows into an annual event as it is an opportunity to share ideas and see each others latest projects. Kudo's to Jerry and everyone that helped him, he has a great operation and obviously cares deeply about the product he sells.

Have you used them yet? how do you like them? I think I am thinking of breaking down and getting the set myself (when my next gets to that stage).

I did not get the full set. I am beginning and plan to make a jig for custom purfling and bindings. I got the cutter with the .150 and .080 bearings. I have not used them yet since the resonator used the bit and bearings I already had. I will most likely try it on a box that I messed up and will use the new cutters on the redo.

You are welcome to come by and try mine out if you want.

Thanks Ken. My current project couldn't be much further away from the binding stage and still be considered "in progress." I may take you up on the offer, but won't be for a while. To be honest, I would love to visit your shop someday. I think you could teach me a thing or two about planes (I'm making it up as I go along. . .).
