I think there are some good ideas here. I agree that the vertical handle would not allow for my "style," but as I type this, I have an open sore on my hand from shooting some tops and backs last weekend. I think a removable handle could be made to fit the hand hold I prefer. I have a bunch of thermo-plastic laying around too.

At first I like this idea, but then I'd rather have my hand on the plane so I can feel what is going on (and not be intermediated by the wood handle). I also find myself varying pressure during the sweep of the cut from front to back. This would not support that behavior.

The final few lines of the article:
"Try it with a knob or carved addition to fit in the web of your hand. If you're not comfortable shaping the wood on the fly, try it using children's modelling clay first. Experiment until you find whatever suits you, although I warn you that it can get addictive.

Once you find the grip shape that suits, apply your finish of choice and put it to work. The death-grip days of shooting-board use will be a distant memory."
