I'm still in. I'm pretty green and am sure I don't' have much to offer. I also don't have anything "in progress" unless you count, 1) strung up for testing before finish is done or 2) plans cut out and mold made. . . I'll bring the former. It is not a guitar, and is not a great effort (kinda slapped together). I did try out some ideas I had kicking around (non tail-piece tail-piece, and "hidden" access port), that someone may be interested in seeing.

I have been thinking about setting up to make my own matching bridge pins and tuner buttons. If anyone is doing that and can bring anything to demo, that would be awesome!

:) I'm debating whether to bring my first one, which is nice looking, but sounds pretty average and needs more fiddling with the intonation, or the second one, which looks like crap, but sounds wonderful except for some occasional fret buzz problems. It also turns out that I am more of a slowpoke than I'd imagined, and I still have an open backed box in the final stages of voicing before closing, so everyone can see what sort of crazyness I'm up to this time.

And then I'll have to drag in all my inlay tools and the top for the next one for the demo.

Oh, and does anyone know if the google map location is accurate? http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=hibdon+hardwood&aq=&sll=38.633802,-90.186789&sspn=0.009906,0.019891&ie=UTF8&hq=hibdon+hardwood&hnear=&ll=38.639434,-90.185351&spn=0.004986,0.009946&t=h&z=17
I can't see any obviously labelled buildings in the area, but I suppose I'll just drive around for a while and call for directions if I don't see it.

I sure enjoyed meeting everyone at the meeting today. It was fun and we were like kids in a candy store going through Hibdons inventory. Jerry has very nice back/side sets. I walked away with a set of curly Anigre, a beautiful quartersawn set of Cocobolo, and some Mahogany scraps for neck/tail blocks.

I saw that Darryl. LOL

I was wondering if you were planning to leave any for the rest of us. :))

I am with Darryl in the enjoyment I had meeting and conversing with so many new friends (or friends who now include a face and name). I hope all made it home safe and have been successful in explaining to your spouse the vital significance your purchases will have on the world economy. If not, well one must sometimes suffer for their art.

I walked out with only a maple top, back and sides as well neck stock for the next resonator. I sure hope I can finish the first one soon so I can begin working on it.

The displays were informative and the exchange of ideas from both those more experienced and those just beginning there lutherial ( I love making up new words) adventures was exciting. I believe Jim will be sharing information soon on doing this again. If you took pictures either send them to Jim or add them to your posting. I have some of Don's harp that I will add soon. That was most impressive.

Thanks again for all your efforts Jim and Jerry Hibdon from Hibdon hardwoods.

Hey Darryl when did you say you were coming back to St. Louis? I may have an order at Janet Davis for you to bring. LOL

Here is a picture of Don Ile's Gothic style harp. It was something to see and we were treated to a short concert by his wife, Ruth

Plus 1 on the thanks to Jerry and Jim! I had a great time, you all did well making this newbie feel welcome. Hibdon was amazing, I will definitely be gong back there for wood. As I type this, I am mixing up a batch of hot hide glue for the soundboard I will be shooting tomorrow; I saw a lot of inspiring work today (thanks everyone) which will be in the back of my mind thorough this build. My only regret is that I forgot to take pictures. I already can't wait until next year!

Drove into tornados on the way home. Stopped on the side of 44 and tornado crossed freeway 10 miles west of us (at the intersection of 44 & 71) headed for Joplin. Scared my daughters bigtime.......numerous tractor-trailer rigs blown over and blahs torn apart. Right now sitting at a quick stop 5 miles S. of 44 (on 71) waiting on another tornado to go through Noel/Pineville area so we can head South to NW AR.

Yikes! Glad you're ok, Darryl.

My brother and I made it back without any trouble. We stopped at Rockbridge state park for a couple hours of hiking, and the storm line was visible on the horizon by then (quite conveniently blocking the sun). Must have been pretty huge to be visible from half way across the state! Heard from back home that it was already making tornadoes in Topeka by then. After another hour or so of driving, the sun was getting down far enough to see lightning in it, which was a nice show. Ended up running into it just about the time we got home. Just a few sprinkles and some relatively close lightning by then.

An hour or so after that though, it produced a major gust front. Crazy rain spraying down like a fire hose, and trees flapping wildly. No large branches down (they're used to it :)). Then we got a major lightning spot right over us... 5-10 strikes with little to no delay before the thunder. Then poof, no more storm.

Anyway, the gathering was most certainly a success. Nice getting to meet everyone face to face, play some instruments, hear and see some construction details, wood processing details from the Hibdons, and dig through the zoot! Quite the impressive stock. Unfortunately I am both extremely slow at deciding on what I want, and pretty much the opposite of an impulse buyer, so I only came out with one Honduran RW set. But it is more or less ideal to my eyes and ears. Gorgeous color and ink lines in both the back and sides, with sapwood on the back, and lower priced because the back is undersized bliss I'll give it a center wedge of Brazilian or African, and it'll be good to go. Almost bought a nifty coco set with some ink lines and a nice wave to the grain too, but ended up bailing at the last second. Kind of regret it now [headinwall] Should have kept digging for sides. I love ink lines and sapwood, but ended up with some plain ones that matched the color better. Oh well, maybe next time.

Arrived home at 11:00 PM (3 hours later than expected). Now a storm with rotation headed at our house. I can't get away from the tornados today!

Yes, thankfully the temp dropped enough that storms that late started loosing energy. So it stormed with high winds but no tornados.

Hey everyone!

Wanted to say that I enjoyed myself at the get together. I ended up with two B/S sets, one curly Anigre and one fiqured Chechum. I've not used either type of wood before. I made the mistake of thinking I could spend half the day and then get in a visit with my dad and sister who live in St. Peters on the west side of St. Louis. I won't do that next year.

Thanks for the Hibdon hospitality! Thanks Big Jim for putting it together. It was good to hear that Jerry felt his investment was justified. Next year I'll try to be prepared to spend more. What a remarkable selection of African Blackwood, Zircote, and wild Cocobolo.

Nice meeting all of you. Looking forward to next year.

Danny R. Little

By the way, It wasn't until we were packing up that I realized that Craig had brought all the stuff to demo how he made those awesome looking rosettes. I don't know if time ran short, he got shy or what, I do know I want to see the process next time!

Thanks to everyone for making it a good time. Always like meeting fellow instrument builders. I really wasn't planing on giving a demo on the rosettes. I really didn't have every thing I would have liked to have to do a demo. Next time I will plan to do one if people want me to. It was a great day even if I didn't spend more that I probably should have on wood, but it sure is pretty.
