So I'm about to finish up a new DVD on cutaways. I wanted to give a couple away. You don't have to buy anything. Simply send an e-mail to: freedvd@mayesguitars.com and you are entered. No message is needed in the subject. Put your name in the topic. I'll draw a couple names either late this week, or Monday next week. That's it. Good luck.

If you have any questions e-mail me direct (not at the address above as that is only for contest purposes) You'll be notified by e-mail if you win (or not) and I'll post the names of the winners here too.

-John

Will you be covering both Venetian and Florentine cutaways?

No. I will be doing a Florentine. They are vastly more complicated (my opinion), harder to execute in both binding, and assembly. The only thing you would want to see in a soft cutaway not described in great detail on this video (mentioned briefly, but not much) is bending the cutaway curve on a venetian. Other than that everything else translates, and then some. I'll be showing full mitering and binding, bending, assembly, ect on a sharp cut, as well as I'll cover all the major points of difference between a non-cut and a cut.

I don't cover the soft cutaway for a couple reasons. First because of the above reasons. Secondly because I only make sharp cutaways these days and don't have my jigs for soft cuts handy.

There is still time to enter. I'll finish filming in the next couple days, and then I'll spend a couple days editing, ect. Then I'll pick a winner.

I've had some other questions about the topics covered. While this doesn't mention them all the main points I cover are the differences between a cutaway and a non cutaway. Some of those include:

- Side Profiles
- Marking/measuring cutaway positioning and cutting it
- Bending the cutaway section
- Making and gluing blocks
- Bowl sanding
- Lining and angles
- Brace layout
- Boxing up
- Binding the cutaway tip, and neck side
- full mitering of purfling on all points and edges
- Neck alignment

So far I've ran through 2 hours worth of raw film. I still have the binding to go. I'll update my site that has all my dvd's for sale on it when it is available ( www.mayesguitars.com/newvdvd.html ).

Till then follow the instructions in the first post and enter the contest if you like. Again no purchase necessary.

I'll draw a winner later tomorrow (Friday) evening. So if you've no entered yet (have over 100 entries) then now is your last chance. I've filmed the entire video (over 3 hours of footage) and I'll be editing for the next couple days. Here is a really quickly thrown together teaser:

http://www.mayesguitars.com/cutaways.mov

Must have quicktime to view. It's about 6mb for you dial up users.

Thanks for playing. Now I gotta trim the fat on this DVD. This is the most raw footage of any DVD I've ever shot... gotta squeeze it down to 2 hours.

Johnathan, there was obviously a spelling error as that should read Darryl Young. Right part of the country, just wrong name.

Hey I finished my first build. Need to let you play it and see what you think.

Darryl

Thanks. I plan on shipping all the orders on Monday. I'm halfway through editing at this time. Just over an hour edited and now getting to the binding/purfling.

I'm calling the cops if I see you parked outside my house waiting for the mailman next week... :)

That'd be great to check out your guitar, congrats on completing one. I'm pretty booked up for the rest of this month but let's meet up sometime in May.

Mine arrived yesterday! I haven't gotten all the way through them yet, but there's a lot of good tips there. (them = I got another of John's videos along with the cutaway one)

Thanks John. Looks good.

Mike
