Well, this one's been done since just before christmas, but I got it back to do the final setup and take some pics. SJ 12 string. Sitka and Sapele with Ebony FB and bridge.





And had this 1964 Silvertone model 1448 in the shop this weekend for a repair. It was cracked right through the tuner holes. These things originally sold for $67.95 and came with the case with built in 3 watt tube amp, cord, instruction book, and a 45 record on how to play guitar. This one's missing the cord, book and record, but is otherwise original as far as I can tell. The amp is cool. The lipstick pickup doesn't drive it hard, but it's got a nice clean sound. When I plug in with my EMG 81/85 rig, it breaks up nicely and had me grooving on all kinds of classic rock. Perfect for a little China Grove!

Rob-The first parlor is Sycamore and the second one is Chechen/Caribbean Rosewood.

This week I closed the box on my L-00. It has been a long time coming and I feel good about it.






Used my Trojy for the first time since building it in 2008. This is my first guitar box so this was a big step. I was nice to use something that has taken up floor space in the garage for so long.


I also got my bandsaw cutting for the first time. I picked it up cheap on Craig’s list and have been cleaning\restoring it over the past year. I either need to replace the spring or get a better blade. But it is cutting.


Next I'm on to the neck and bridge.

I'm currently gluing the purflings and bindings on #7 which I started the day after Christmas. These pictures were as I was preparing to close the box last weekend.

Sound Clips of most of my guitars

I'm fretting a neck today.

Closed the box and bound number 2. Slope shoulder dread, red spruce/black walnut back and sides, flame koa bindings. This one is for a good friend. The walnut came from a tree his grandpa felled over 20 years ago that I dimensioned and thicknessed.

Cleaning up bindings on a classical. This is the first binding job done using my homemade Fleishman/Williams style jig. I am glad I took the time to build it, no question.

First body that got routed was a modified dread, maple B/S.



The real ongoing job.

Robbie, thanks for the comments. I like the sound port a lot. I plan to inlay small, scaled mother of pearl tracks meandering up the fretboard for position markers. My friend flipped when I showed him the port and loves the inlay idea. That's what it's all about. I plan on building me an OM with a wild turkey (the bird, not the whiskey) theme and a turkey track port.

I finished off the Lutz/Maple FE19 guitar that I recently posted.

Pulled the top off of my wife's 200 year old 'cello for some much needed repair work, which is now done and I am setting up to get the top back onto the sides. These are the "before" shots.

Did a couple of small repairs to some student violins.

Continued the scroll carving on the viola da gamba.

Completed the old racing canoe, which came in as a beat up wreak of a canoe.

And some more canoe repairs: varnishing,canvassing, filling, etc...

And I am designing/adapting a new rowboat. This will be a hybrid Whitehall/Rangeley. Construction starts as soon as I get some of the current project out and get some space back in the shop!

Hey douglas, is that an Old Town canoe.
My friend has one like that, but his looks to be wider.

This is my sapele and Lutz J45.

I had to stick it together for the pic - the bridge is stuck on with blue tape.....

I am getting close to done on the varnish work - getting ready to fret up the neck.

No pictures but I have been busy. I sprayed the last lacquer coats on my OM cutaway on Tuesday and am now working on binding the Cocobolo wedge. I will post some pictures of the wedge once the binding is complete. It is real cold up here this weekend so a lot of time was spent in the shop, not much reason to go out.

No,not an Old Town. We don't get hardly any around these part. I've seen maybe one, ever, here.

This one does not have any ID left, but I suspect that it is probably a Chestnut. It has been heavily modified from its original freighter configuration, not be me but by the racers who use them. Amongst other things, has been narrowed significantly and the resultant deformations corrected. These canoes are used with the bow rowing and the stern paddling. Competition is fierce.

It used to look like this back in the fall.

Wow, great save Doug. Looks a lot narrower than the 18 foot freighters we used to use in my canoe club back in the 70's. They had space for two paddlers in the middle and one at each end. Can't recall who they were made by however. Whatever happened to Beaver Canoe?

Here's the way I do peghead veneers. I cut the shape out of a 3/4" plank and slice off headstock veneers as I need them...

Been spending most of my time lately doing repairs (how did that happen? ). Otherwise have an walnut 000 and a mahogany 0-16 ready for binding, necks are built and fret boards slotted - just need time to get back to them.

Mark- I'm especially interested in the Sycamore since I have a set waiting to surface to the top of the pile. How is to work with? Be interested in sound. Keep us posted for sure. Nice soundport on that one by the way.

In my shop I'm busy working on a Madagascar Rosewood/Sitka concert size. I picked up the Mad Rose at the Montreal guitar show a few years back. Beautiful wood. Probably the nicest set I've worked with so far.

Getting this one out to Joe for finish today. It is an indian rosewood/sitka spruce ES (a shape I started making while learning from Sergei). I am excited for this one.
