The amazing "Tree" of quilted/figured mahogany has come to life again! A precious few guitars have been made of this tree discovered in the Honduras jungle in 1965. I am a private individual who has a limited amount of spectacular pieces of "the Tree." If you make very high end instruments you may wish to see what I have to offer. rupert36@gmail.com

I apologize for upsetting people by posting a portion of the quilted mahogany for sale. What a mess I made of that! I am a simple senior citizen who had the good fortune to buy some of this unusual tree. I made the point regarding high priced instruments so I would not waste anyone’s time with a high cost material. Economically priced guitars are a blessing.
This is genuine stock from the 1965 tree which I purchased in 1984 from Handloggers in Sausalito California. As you have already pointed out I have no link with luthiers or playing instruments but have a raw material which is extremely rare. In the week or so I have released this stock for sale I have realized that there is more than a religious love/connection with beautiful materials and craftsmanship. I can share that because of my hobby of furniture making.
I am so sorry if I have misrepresented my material. If anyone would like to see it or have photographs I would be happy to oblige.
I have posted in good faith and also apologize to the masters of this site. If you consider this not to be a genuine offer to supply one of the worlds’s rarest woods to extraordinary makers of musical instruments please withdraw all reference to my posting.

How is this any more uncouth than posting a message in the main forum EVERY time you have something to sell in the classifieds? Which has become VERY common here.

"Just passed a bowel movement---come see it in the classifieds!"

Peter, the thing is that one shouldn't have post # 1 to sell stuff.
The proper thing to do is pay the small fee to list stuff for sale in the classifieds.
Maybe you've done that?
Some of the folks that have been around here for a while get permission from Lance to post
to sell, or to obtain charity for someone.
So, that said, I think you might have some nice wood to sell.
There have been some shady spammers that come along around here.

That doesn't bother me so much. The classifieds usually aren't very busy, so it would be a waste of time for everyone to check for new stuff constantly compared to just seeing it here. Plus it encourages more people to sign up, if they hear about something they might want to buy, versus just signing up in hopes of something coming along later.

But first time posters selling on the main forum... no.

Yeah, but elsewhere in the world we typically associate, "I had this great find on Craigslist!" with that. Deals go to the diligent.

Off-Topic isn't getting a lot of love lately. Maybe I'll start threads there whenever I get a new book or do a cool workout; then I'll billboard them here in the main forum. "Overhead squats are still hard! Check off-topic!"

I'm not trying to be facetious, but you can make the argument that the main forum shouldn't be used for any selling easier than you can say someone needs to first meet the social qualifications in order to take advantage of the privilege.

No sweat, Peter. It's pretty straightforward. If you want to post a solicitation for your wood, subscribe to the classifieds here - http://luthiersforum.com/forum/subscribe.php

Rules here are pretty straightforward. Anyone can sign up - and if you pay the nominal fee (about $12 a year), you can post items for sale.

As for others noting that items are for sale in the classifieds, I don't see what the controversy is. I've appreciated the update, as otherwise the stuff's gone by the time I got there. Also, these are members who've paid the fee to have the privilege to post items for sale, rather than spammers. As for the relative relevance of the posts within the guitar building forum, well, as with anything, some of it is interesting to me (and others, I'd presume) and some isn't. If I'm not interested, I don't open the thread.

Did anyone notice btw that the classified have been changed so that when somthing is SOLD the header can be edited now to read SOLD. If more people use that change it makes it easier to look and not spend time going through threads that are no longer available. I stopped going there much because of that particular frustration .

I have been tempted to do what was done here to try and attract attention to classifieds . So i guess the best thing is , pay the 12 dollars and get to be known here and then see what happens in classifieds for u !

I'm guilty of this and will probably keep it up until I'm told not to. I've sold a LOT of stuff in the classifieds and can tell you from personal experience there is a MAJOR uptick in views for my listings if I post a short blurb on the main board. For example, the views more than double for a 3 day listing period WITH notice given to the main board versus a 3 day listing period without notice. People use this forum in different ways. Posting on the main helps me get the attention of those certain members whom are interested in whats being sold, but don't visit in a manner that makes my listing jump out at them. If they are paid members of the classifieds they get to see the goods.

While the following point is irrelevant to Mr. Orr's irk...it is my opinion that the classifieds should be a viewable sub-forum for all members, then pay if you want to participate. I'm not the decision maker though.

Doesn't seem like an issue to me. They paid their way, and reminds others of the classifieds and the goods available there possibly bringing more revenue to the site from subscriptions.

Well, I completely agree with you...

However, obviously you'll get more viewers if you advertise. You're turning me around on this though. I'm starting to think I'll capitalize on the phenomenon too. Everything that deserves some traffic should get some PR.

I just start to wonder what advantage I have for paying the monthly fee I do to advertise/sponsor. Then I look and see the lack of sponsors that once populated and offered awesome input to this board and sometimes think maybe I should just pay $12 a year and keep my participation strictly business, but that is not what I signed on for........We are going backwards in my opinion but I do continue to hang on! (I am a gluten for punishment!)

I am suitably chastised. Thank you for all the advice. I surrender peacefully and will not post again. I really thought I was being of service bringing a rare material to notice.
The last time I felt this bad was when I fell on my face in my sisters wedding cake.

HI,

have got a question: What is so special about "the Tree"? I have heard and read this story now a few times here and there, but to me, it just looks like normal figured / quilted / flamed mahogani, name it like you prefer. Whats so special about that? I have seen this kind of mahogani quite often. I am earning my money with guitarbuilding but mostly i work in wood industrie. Veneer and solid timber sales.

Any further explanaitions for me?

Best regards, Alex

H Y P E...

It's kinda like the "famed" Gilchrist "D log" for mandolins. I used to joke about that quite a bit and call mine the "famed E-bay log".
