Hey Woody,

I agree, Dennis is a great bloke...but your link only takes me to an OLF page which states that I do not have permission to view...could this be because I am too tight to pony up for the classifieds??

Cheers

Kim

Yep, it's in the classifieds. I didn't think about that. Basically, on Feburary 25(2010) Michael posted a Peterson VS-II tuner for sale. Dennis bought it the same day. They exchanged friendly comments several times the same day. On July 4 2010 Dennis posted.
Quote:
OK, I paid for this on February 25th, and have been patient beyond anyone's definition of patient. I paid immediately, literally within seconds (if I remember correctly - it has been quite a while and my memory may be off a bit, it might have been minutes rather than seconds.)

Several times, shipment was promised, but it never has been shipped. I know Michael left the OLF, ticked off at someone, but that is not a reason to leave me in the lurch. Does anyone know Michael? Does anyone have contact with him? If someone has contact with Michael, please tell him that I still want the tuner shipped to me - not just a refund. It would not be fair to put me through all this waiting - over four months - and end up with no tuner after all.

I'm an honest person, a straight shooter, and very understanding, but this has gone beyond even my patience. I am still assuming that Michael is an honest person, and that he will send me the tuner that I paid for.

Dennis

Michael never responded. JJ mentioned trying to contact Michael through Robbie
John Mayes (another great guy) posted
Quote:
Dennis,

I have the same tuner. I'll let you borrow mine until you get yours from Michael if you need one. Doesn't fix the mess, but if your in a need for one I'm more than happy to loan mine out. I hate to see ya get stiffed.

John

A few days later Dennis posted
Quote:
Thanks JJ. I don't want to ask anything of Robbie or put him in the middle, just because he has dealings with Michael.

Something has gone terribly sour with this deal. Something must have happened in Michael's life that led to this, because I just refuse to believe that it was his intent to rip me off. After thinking about this for a good long while, I have decided to make sure that Michael does not rip me off, by just giving him the money if he needs it that bad. If he ever sends me the tuner, great, I'll use it, but if not, I'll just think of this as $85 that I gave to someone who was in some kind of financial trouble. I understand that Michael accidentally broke one or more of his teeth with a wrench, then had a heart attack, and I just can't add to that list by letting him think he stole money from me.

Michael, if you are reading this, I'm still convinced that you have a good heart, and that you are an honest person. I forgive you the debt. I hope things turn around for you.

John, what a wonderfully generous offer. Warms my heart. I probably won't take you up on your generous offer, but it really shows your character and I sure do appreciate you.

Dennis

My apologies if posting all these quotes is against forum rules.
Also my apologies to Kim (and anyone else) for posting a link you couldn't access. I understand and respect your views on the classifieds, even though my views are different.

I was at that FP class at RRCC last year. I remember the issues with his work as well as him stating he pulled back a bit from building after his fiasco with the feds. I guess someone bought a guitar from him with a fraudulent check, and the feds showed up at his door one day. Kind of turned him off from building. Maybe not the building so much, but building for others. There were also OLF issues with people making rude and inappropriate comments in messages to him that he felt he shouldn't have to deal with. I dont really know the details on that though. so I'll leave it at that. Dont remember him saying anything about comments on the OM plans bracing.

I was real surprised on the tuner issue. He seemed like stand up guy when I meet him at RRCC and the previous year when I purchased a Blackheart Sassafras set from him here.

All in all, I think its just that he didn't have time for it.

Michael and I are friends - last year we did a serious project together, so I felt, incorrectly it seems, that I could tease Michael a little bit.

Oh, and all you guys who don't KNOW why Michael is not posting, are just spreading rumors/speculating. That's not cool.

Is it just me......or did Michael in making the final "cleanup" of his OM plans for the OLF make several changes that made the design stiffer? I waited on the "cleaned up" version he sold to the OLF before buying and recall being disappointed in the changes.

Todd, I've no problem with your comments, you have always measured your words pretty carefully. I try too, also. And this is not directed to you, but I really, really hate the idea that we can't have any fun here once in a while. Life is too damned short.

Steve, I can't win. I tried to reply tongue and cheek and got soundly smacked multiple times. So I gave what I knew. I didn't speculate on the departure at the OLF. I was in the thread where Michael threw up his hands and basically said he was leaving. I don't know his thinking, just what he said.

But obviously either tongue and cheek or recollection of events seems to please. Oh well.

Wish him well for us, next time you see him.

Filippo

I enjoyed your tounge in cheek comments ! [:Y:] We should all be able to do so on occasion without retrebution . " now someones gonna chew me over spelling " laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

Thanks for taking the time to post that Woody, just shows how right you were in saying that Dennis Leahy is a great guy...many, including myself, could all learn much from him that has nothing whatsoever to do with Michael or guitars.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone who posted HONEST replies. I did not intend to stir up a hornets nest
with my question. I was away from the OLF for a while and when I came back noticed that
Michael was not posting. He seemed to be a very giving person. I know that he donated
plans to the OLF to be resold for the good of the forum. From what I have been able to
glean from the replies it appears he finally got fed up by a few jerks on the forums and
decided it just wasn't worth the grief.

In my opinion the loss of his posts is a detriment to the forum.

Dave

Dave – I'm pretty sure one does not need to intend to stir up a hornet’s nest here in order for that to be the outcome. I had the same question and am glad you asked it. I'm glad to know at least some of the facts behind MDP’s recent absence from the forum.

I ALSO enjoyed and saw no harm in the tongue in cheek humor, and suspect the more factual answers would have come along whether people got testy or not.

This forum is an unbelievably valuable resource to someone like me. I am indebted to the many experienced luthiers who freely and generously share their knowledge here, and to others who ask questions from which I also benefit immensely. I selfishly hope this forum is never compromised due to petty argumentativeness.
