So sweet young thing with BIG brown eyes comes bouncing in wanting
a travel guitar.

Here be the proposed sketch.

Carved arch top of lutz
Cedar neck body and back.
Paduk headstock, fret board and banding.
Gold hardware.
Short neck at 23.12 inch string length.




Keep your fingers crossed for me...I could use the cash.

That looks really cool. I hope to see that one finished soon.

Looks nice- are you going to do a traditional carved arched top,
or a "combo" with a bent flattop soundboard (does that make sense?).

I did a couple of Martin "O" style small guitars a couple of years ago.
Used an external bolt for the neck, so I can take them off quick. One
uses a tailpiece like you show. They work well for travel, and sound
surprisingly good- I made the body depth about 1/2" deeper than
Martin did, seemed to help the bass.

Yup,

Carved top and back although at first glance it will look like a bent top since there will be no re-curve, or very little. Me after that very round voluptuous full feeling to the instrument by rounding over the ribs and banding. See pic.

Ya, nice n fat looking in drawing, but in reality the bodies length slims the look out. The carved plates and rounded off sides keeps it from becoming chunkie while giving the body cavity a good sized volume of air to compensate for its narrowness.

Paduk headstock, fret board and banding. Me lucked out a few years back and bought 4 cants of 5" x 6" x 12 ft Paduk for $4.50 a board foot. Still got 3 of them and no they ain't for sale.

And sorry Alan...the package is a no show.

See Padma figures me foot size is just a good as that dead French king who established by decree that the length of the violins string is to be the lenght of his foot which became a unite of measurement in France known as pied du roi. Then some luthier dude doubled that and it became the guitar standard of aprox 25 inches + - 1/2inch. No rhyme or sonic resonant reasoning. No mystical import or cosmic wonderment. Just a kings ego. Other luthiers followed suit. Then came guitar production for the masses assess which enshrined this measurement as some sort of sacrosanct standard of the nothingness of the what and every luthier since then simply does the poly wanna cracker mind numbing knock off .

So since we kicked the French out of North America long time way back when and since me one for not standing on custom just cuz everybody else does, I, me, Duh Padma sees no reason what so ever at all to follow an illogical reason for the continued use of the "pied du roi" as a measurement in luthierism.

Besides this is a travel guitar for some sweet young thing with big brown eyes. And she wants it mean and lean, light and short and me rather take an inch or so from the neck than the body. Besides she is an up the neck picker not a strum de dummer and as such really wont miss the
the length of the digits of a humanoids hind legs from the neck.

Me decided me gonna go take another 5/8 out of the neck and add it to the body length in this travel guitar me about to be build. Ya, gonna shorten it up to 22.5 Also gonna lengthen the tail piece to shorten the strings after length between the tailpiece and the bridge. This will stiffen up the compliance of the strings after hearing what you be saying about "soft strings" on short necks.

The more me think about this design, the more me think me gonna build it even if she don't go for it.

Regarding knock offs....just like peoples, sorry no two the same...but do not misconstrue that to mean that me won't build more travel guitars. In fact this very morning me was just fondling a Padauk neck blank and a back plate of black African thinking now woulden't this make a nice tight little traveler. So yes me will make more "all cedar" travelers. And at first glance they will look some what alike...but in reality no two are ever even close to being the same. And being the same is what Padma considers a Kock off the old block.

Me even thinking of putting the Solfeggio Frequency builds on the back burner and doing a run of 5 or 6 quick and dirty travelers instead (all different proportions) using cedar and 3 ply for the plates, just to work out some of the size, shape, feel and stuffs like that. But then.....
the thing is me took it in me head to wander into me painting studio a few hours ago and well the truth is me head is still back there...perhaps if me wander back in to me shop....

I hope you realize that shortening up another 3/8 doesn't mean you have to shorten your foot as well. That can get messy.
