Gloating or complaining?

Neither. Why do you ask?

This didn't include all the guitar stuff I bought for myself in Dec. We won't go there!!!!!

Well, I have more nice tools than any one man can use for luthierie.

This will be corny(for international members, "sentimental drivel.")

Eleven years ago my wife of 34 years and I divorced-I had broken our trust and became involved with one of my secretaries. Our daughter was about 19 at the time. My marriage to the secretary lasted around 2.5 years. I then started seeing a woman who had no apologies to make to my family. We are still very close. The family adores her-rightly so.

I spend the evening of Christmas day with my ex-wife(the real one) and her husband, his daughter, my daughter and her husband(lucky-I have always liked my son-in-law) some friends of theirs from church and some great crazy little dogs.

They treat me with deep affection;they really want me to be there; they exchange presents with me. It is as though I have never wronged any of them. If that is not a priceless gift, then, what is? Every night I literally pray for their welfare and happiness-in fact my God Bless and thank you list is so long that I am lucky to get sleep ;) ;) . I have these two silly long haired chihuahuas and they lie down quietly when I say it is time for prayers-one crosses his little paws.

There are people here who have been kind to me and I "throw them into the list" every so often. Thanks to all of you who have done me right-nobody here has ever wronged me. When you hit these mid-60's, you have a much more realistic view of life and value in life.

I sincerely hope that all of you receive such gifts now, and in the future.Stuff from StewMac, LMII, John Hall and such folks is great too. I hope for better times for all. Mike Tobey

Touching note Mike. Thanks for reminding us of the really important things.
Along with the love & support of friends & family, Santa brought me a new Ridgid R2401 Trim Router. What a great little tool. It's a little more expensive than the Colt, but from the trial run I gave it today, well worth the extra.
I have a PC & a couple of Bosch Colts, but I think this one will be my go-to small router.
The designers put a lot of thought into the design & they definitely got it right!
All the best to everyone for a happy & healthy new year.

Because when there is a thread asking what tools people got for Christmas, it's off the edge when someone posts, "nothing" and proceeds to describe what their daily existence over the day of Christmas looks like. Said another way, gee Hans, isn't it obvious why he'd ask?

Filippo

Ah, Robin checks in...
Gee Fillipo, why would you care? Who are you to decide what's "off the edge"...
I believe I stated what kind of new tools I got for Christmas. My "daily existence over the day of Christmas" was my contribution of my experience as some others posted theirs. Got a problem with that?
You two must be the "Forum Police"...

Uh...at the risk of repeating myself...the usual: contextual clues as to your state of mind.

And just why would you need to know my "state of mind"? Are you a psychologist? Psychiatrist? Are you giving free advice?

Ahh, reading text for "hidden messages". Sounds conspiratorial...glad to see you rise to the challenge.
No, I'm not suggesting that "student of human behavior" is a prerequisite for reading the OLF, but if the latter fits, that would make you a student. Keep practicing...
I've enjoyed this little banter, but I'm off to do a fret job on my "mini- bimbo".
Enjoy your quality time with your new gun on New Years day, hopefully you won't be blowing holes in anything living...

A happy, safe New Year to the rest of you!

Apology accepted, Fillipo. After all it is a new year and I have always believed in starting over. I am sorry for my outburst towards you. I saw nothing wrong with my post to the OP's question, and I told a bit about our best Christmas ever. To be belittled for that and have my sanity questioned is a bit over the top in my book, but that is out of my control.
Todd, should you be willing to start a new year, I'm for that, or we can stay out of each others way or continue on with our beehive , silly as it is...

Funny, I've never seen your curious mind questioning others "state of mind" on this forum. Were I to care, I might suggest Al-anon, but frankly I just don't give a chit.
Enjoy your beehive
Bye then...

Well, thanks to all of you for letting me get away with my maudlin tale. I've just had many perspective re-alignments lately. My Mom recently died and some other things have come up and I think differently now. I offered it not as judgment-if I had gotten a gift that was of interest here I would have enjoyed sharing that and used this bliss little feller.

Well I, for one, liked your story. Things happen in life that sometimes are not so good; it's nice to hear that some folks can get past them.

And there are certainly things that are much more important about the Christmas season than what toys we received although I (obviously) enjoy that part too.

It is both rude and intellectually clumsy to suggest that your opponent is an alcoholic absent any shred of evidence or suggestion.

But seriously...it's really not that difficult to both get your point across and to avoid a descend into boorish behavior.

As an observation from an outsider, Todd's comment was designed to get a response much more so than Haan's was. Haan's offered an olive branch which was unfortunately declined. I'd suggest anyone on the forum avoiding the type of comment which is guaranteed to illicit the type of exchange just seen. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

"Geez" is right. "Complaint" vs. "gloat" is clearly a false choice and Haans obviously meant neither.

Ok guys....

I received a kit of 230 HSS drill bits, from 3/64th to 1/2 by 64ths. A kit of 75 screwdrivers. A nice jigsaw and the LMII manuel Fret slotting system.

Absolutely correct, Darrel...my question was designed to elicit a response from Haans (and not an illicit one, I would hope)...specifically whether his post was a smugly superior gloat or crabby complaint...in either case not too difficult a question. Following reiteration of that very point, he's suggested a number of unkind things which certain readers have selectively chosen to ignore. As to the why of my query? If complaint, I suspect any number of us might have risen for a toast to gladder things, and if a gloat...well, a turd in the punch bowl is reason enough to avoid the grog. As to an olive branch, I'd suggest reading that specific post again...it's anything but.

And I

I've said this before Todd. You seem like a reasonably smart guy who has been quite helpful to many over the years. This is countered by a smarmy know-it-all demeanor, or at least that's the way it comes across to me. Communication in an environment like a forum can be difficult as the subleties of face to face dialogue are often lost in translation. It is however quite easy to pick up the difference between harmless and mean spirited. You need to take a breath and step back sometimes before you post.

Well... slotted, square, phillips, hexa, torx... short, long, medium, mini, extra long, short handle, longe handle, curved, precision, etc...

I always worked with only an all-in-one rachet-screwdriver but, you know... it's a gift.

I have to build some screwdriver holders.

Francis

Somebody tell that "inquiring mind" that Al-anon is not about alcoholism. It's about learning to run your own program, NOT others. AA is about alcoholism.

And smarmy? def: "excessively or unctuously flattering, ingratiating, servile, etc." Mmm...not thinking that's all that accurately descriptive an adjective.

Reasonably means just that. You may have to dig a little deeper into the definitions of smarmy Todd until you can find the most appropriate one. It's more around "Cheesy, pretentious and smug". Once again, just what comes across in your delivery from time to time. You'd be a lot more valuable to the forum sticking to technical help and not trying to evaluate someone's state of mind.
