Monday I put the finishing touches on this bad boy .... and now learning to play it too .. Stephen Bennett's Issoudun, and Perestroika. Its sounds huge, and the natural reverb is unbelieveable - I may never play a regular guitar again.

Makore back and sides, lutz top, afr blackwood bindings, headplates and bridge. Spalted maple rosettes with blk/green/blk purfs, ebony FB, Gold/composite 510s.

Will have some pro shots soon, off to see the photographer on Friday ...

Worked on a lumber rack. The new shop space is slowly coming together. I have two more two shelf pieces to mount up high. The space under the rack will eventually be a bench with the RAS build in, so I didn't want the rack two run across too far. I checked for strength by standing on one of the shelf brackets. It held all my 195 lbs without a hitch. Lag bolted to the wall studs.

Mike/Robbie...here is a picture of the way my jig mounted up. Mine is just a piece of maple with the UHMW screwed to it. The parallelogram I used MDF and nylon bushings in the holes to keep them from wallowing out.

Guys, a favour.
Can you please load images as attachments, as intended, (rather than just copy/paste full size images), so threads don't take forever to load??
Much appreciated!
Thanks

I agree. I posted something over at the Build Forum, but no one seemed to notice. 8 or 10 big pictures from a Photobucket or other site really slows things down. Posting the uploads allows the forum to control things, and the thumbnails, even though reasonably sized, load much faster. Then if you want to see the bigger picture, you can click on the thumbnail. If you have a slow connection, you can see what's happening without your computer freezing up.

I didn't realize using OLF bandwidth to host pictures was "as intended". I must have gotten confused by the "IMG" button at the top when I was posting. Anyway, I removed my "offending" pictures. I'll try to do things "as intended" from now on.

I personally appreciate the larger photos as they allow me to see more detail, and the pages never taken longer than a second or so to load for me. idunno I REALLY hope this does not discourage people from posting photos!

Charlie, you can click on pictures that have been posted as attachments to see them full size. E.g., another picture of my first in final stages of FP:

Uh, gee, thanks, Haans, but I can't take credit for them. They're off the shelf from LMI. They're maple and brown. Some of them look black in the picture, but I think they're artifacts of the jpeg compression process.

Agreed Fillippo, same here, doing another conversion to get them small enough to post as an attachment for the weekly "what's on your bench" threads will result in fewer posts, methinks...

If you use Windows Resizer, you can do it on the fly.

I think the point of all this is that this forum has always hosted the pictures by choice. it is the only way to have a decent archive of threads. People do all kinds of things with their 3rd party albums, including deleting them. When that happens the threads are useless. When the forum hosts the pictures they are there forever, unless something terrible happens. Think if all tutorials had off site hosted pictures. Odds are that few of them would be whole any more. I know I have deleted some of my 3rd party pictures, and I have several thousand out there in build albums. I don't plan to move or delete them, but all it takes is a change in address and they are all gone for viewing on the forum.

If you are reading the thread somewhere where access to sites like Photobucket is filtered, (like at work) you don't see the photos.

Not that I would ever do that at work.

I'm working on a bass banjo. Sorry that the pictures are fuzzy. I took it with my phone and I must have jiggled a bit.
A friend of mine made his own bass out of a stainless steel vent hood. I made it to his own specs. He's Wintering in Seattle and doesn't want to cart his bass back any for across the country so I offered to make him something. The scale length and the shape of the neck all match the instrument that he is currently playing.

The banjo is made from a used bass drum. I sliced it in half and move the gussets from the back of the drum to the front so as to make it have 16 rather than the usual 8 for a bass drum. Banjo usually have a lot of gussets.

The head that I'm using is the old beat up head that came with the drum. When the banjo is ready I'll put a new head on it.

The customer plays fretless but needs the fret markings so I enlayed ebony strips and planed them flush.

I'm not paying too much attention to the fit and finish because the original drum is already pretty beat up.

The neck is 5/4 maple with a mahogany head plate.

Cut the soundport.
Fretted the fingerboard.
Glued on the fingerboard.
Located and glued on the bridge.
Carved the neck. And before I get any smart-ass comments, the photo is the BEFORE shot!
Did a rough setup.
Currently letting the guitar settle in before final set up.

Soon, on to the finish!

After a little bit of playing in the true sound is starting to emerge. I'm liking it! I have only an old set of strings with no high E, just a spare G for set up. Ugh... Ordering new strings today. Looking forward to hearing the entire voice of this guitar.

Not worth a photo but I'm finally starting to get some time back in the shop after a grueling work schedule combined with several construction projects around the house.

Pressed in frets for the first time on a replacement neck. Used Titebond diluted with water as a lube (thanks John Hall I think?) and it worked well. Previous necks were done with a hammer or by gluing the frets in. I had a few frets pop loose some months after I glued them in so I was reluctant to do that on a customer neck even though the result is very good. I'm hoping that pressing them in will require less leveling/shaping than tapping them in. I should be able to get back to it tonight so we'll see. The learning continues ;)

I we are all going to use attached pictures at least we need to make them a little larger than what has been done above so we can see a little more detail. I don't see any advantage to doing his except we will fill up the forum hard drive a little faster. For me I would much rather see the linked pictures at a higher resolution but then again I have a non steam powered computer and am willing to pay for and have access to high speed internet. If we are to not use the photo linking function it should be removed or is this all really a problem or just a few peoples opinions.

What do our list owners feel

Fred

I have been working on a space in my basement which will be like a kind of a shop/office. I'll do assembly/setup/french polish in there. out in the garage in a corner, I have all the dustmaking, sawing, cutting, sanding and routing stuff.

I built a 12' wide stud wall that will have a door in it. I put pegboard on the shop side off it, and I'll soon put drywall on the other side. I'll put a vapor barrier in there to help control humidity somewhat. Yesterday I built a bookcase that covers an entire wall, 12' feet wide.

After spending a few years building at a bench that sat next to a washer and dryer, I'm hoping to bring my work to "the next level."

In the past, it has been, generally, the policy here to upload photos. A large influx of new members who participate on forums that do not hos photos has brought on the current trend, I believe, and the lack of participation of the owners has allowed it to grow. I know that I have been knocked off line, when I'm at home, more than once when I tried to open a page with a bunch of large pictures. Can't seem to get a handle on that problem, but it happens too often for it not to be a problem. I'm on a digital cable and have a home network.

I have posted a lot of pictures here over the last three years, and when I resize, I resize from a 3072x2304 image at about 3MB to a 1024x768 at about 100KB (this one is actually about 80KB)

I believe it's big enough to see just fine when you click on the image and open it up.
But, that's just my opinion.

If you are going to post from Photobucket or some other 3rd party host, I'd suggest limiting the size of the shared photos to about 800x600 to keep them within the frame of the forum. When they are bigger than that, they cause one to have to scroll left to right to see everything and read the text. It just makes it harder to read the whole thing. Here is one of my photobucket images at 800x600

In looking at posts in this thread and others, the files that are around or greater than 80K will enlarge well enough to show detail but the 20K or less sized files are way too small. Also some cropping of the image to remove non esential background also maximizes the detail of the actual subject of the post. For me the paid membership photobuck is the way I prefer but will change to the attached pictures if needed and post the url to the actual pictures if people are interested in looking in greater detail.

I think we need to do like Waddy as his show great detail when clicked on.

For viewing on the computer screen, 80-100kb work just about right. The image is big enough to show well, but small enough to fit in the screen and download adequately. I'm in the camp that hate it when someone posts very large file size photos.
