It may be just me but the placement, angle and spacing of the tonebars in the Guitar Plans Unlimited J-45 plans don't look quite right to me based on photos I've seen of actual AJ and J-45 bracing. idunno

You can't compare the AJ to the J-45, they are different animals. The only thing they have in common is the shape of the body...

Todd - your comment about the variation in brace placement makes sense. I appreciate the heads up about lower bout width and cases too...that's good to know!

Don't know if you've seen this, but StewMac has a pretty good article on how to brace a forward X Martin D. http://www.stewmac.com/tsarchive/ts0051.html
This may not apply directly to the jumbo but it may give you more of an idea of where to start.

The bracing on AJ's is quite different than the bracing on Pre War Martins. Another thing that's missed is the tops are usually thicker than.....normal.

The Henkegrams in the vintage Gibson thread on UMGF are pretty good guides to bracing layout. My approach to a J-35/J-45 style slope shoulder Jumbo has been to pull a body outline from either a decent plan set (the Collins set is based on a '50's J-45), determine X angle, soundhole setback, fretboard end/soundhole location, and tonebars/finger locations from photos. The resulting instrument was so successful that I've begun building it and a 0000/Grand Aud on spec.

An AJ should be a similar job...do the research (which includes looking at the interior shots for construction details), fix the outline and soundhole location, then fill in the blanks on the rest of the stuff.

Hey Todd - thanks for the info! I've spend a lot of time looking at and comparing those Henkegrams and I was thinking of doing something similar. I'm glad to hear you have been successful with that approach! [:Y:]

Thanks Woody - that's good to know as it is something that would not be readily apparent by looking at bracing photos or even examining an old AJ in person, unless one knew to look for it. I certainly wouldn't have.

Wow, that IS thick! Is it tapered toward the edges or does it remain pretty thick throughout the lower bout?

Thanks meddlingfool!

I'm afraid I haven't the means to tell. That was taken with calipers at the soundhole. I was very surprised. I would love other AJ owners to measure theirs.
