Here are 2 new ones I recently finished. They are #4 and #5 and I tried out a few new things. Am OM for my daughter who was in Scotland this summer at a fiddle camp and came home saying "all the Scottish musicians play more than one instrument", kidnapped my guitar and is doing well learning. An excuse to build #4. Yaaaa!

Padauk back and sides
Lutz top and bracing-10 for $200 deal from Shane. Thanks Bro!
Indian Rosewood binding
BRW bridge
WR Cedar burl rosette
Nitro over West epoxy

This guitar gave me a bit of grief. I had a little chip out on the top when I cut the binding channel. I didn't know how bad it was until I started to finish and was too far in to re top. I did a bit of a goofy inlay that I don't care for but my daughter is happy. [:Y:] Any of the problems I had building were forgotten when I strung 'er up. I like it a lot. Beautiful clear tone with very cool bell like over tones. :D

It was quite a challenge cutting the vine. Actually Andy Depaul cut most of it..... but I had to shorten it by about 1/8". I did a compensated nut (thanks Tony!) and am happy with the results. There seems to be a little less B string issues that sometimes seem to happen. First time using West for pore filling. Thanks for the great toot Todd! I had to find out for myself whether it would be better to take it back to bare wood before finishing and did so on the back. Big mistake. Holy crap is that wood have pores. It took a lot of coats to fill. Also my first mitred purfs with some excellent coaching from my good friend Dan Minard it was a little more time consuming but not too difficult.

#5 is for me because a parlour is a must have for me and I sold my last one.

EIR back and sides
Shane's discount Lutz-killer silk
Wenge binding and butt
Rope and Herringbone from Shane
Gold fretwire from Shane
Headplate from Shane, lotta Shane in this :)

This guitar is opening up nicely and will be great and I'm happy to say it is almost flawless. Man it sure it hard to achieve perfection though. For me there always seems to be something. Sometimes small and sometimes not. gaah
This one got gold fret wire and I like it. It is harder than nickel but still works fairly easily and they look cool. These got pressed in. I will never hammer another fret that can be pressed. I tried out vinyl sealer on this one. I have to say it's a no go for me. IMHO the adhesion isn't great. It did make for nice base for the nitro though and looked like a factory matt finish. So ya, nothing but good to say about Lutz. Thanks Shane.

Few more photos to come.

Hey Danny - they're both gorgeous! I love the look of the padauk. It looks a little like cocobolo. How was it to work with? I really like the look of the wendge trim against the EIR on the parlor, too. Very classy!

Awesome work, Danny. I am glad to hear that the lutz is good sounding (and looks great, too). Me and Steve Wheeler went in halves for a batch. My next guitar will be topped with it.

Yay Danny!
Nice work.
I don't think I've ever seen sapwood in Paduak.
I'm curious as to how the two compare soundwise.
I'm thinking about doing squarenecks, instead of Weisses, because Allied Luthiers in town here has such nice stuff,
but it's all too small for weiss.........
So, I'm looking for a om,o,oo,ooo,d shape.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Congratulations!
Beeauuteeful!

Danny: Nice work on both...!!! Congrats. Padauk is a tonewood that needs a bit more recognition, have built a couple and was impressed with the result. I also used some of Shane's special last fall on a mahogany dread and also impressed with that.Take care.
Tom

Nice work Danny, I especially like the parlor!
What is the neck wood on that one, looks light colored?

Great job Danny.

That paduak looks great. Do you have any more photos of it? I just cut some paduak with sapwood and would love to see more...

Hans... that headstock inlay does seem familiar. ;) ... and looks good.

Both very nice. Is your shop still orange from the padauk :D I really like the parlour. The slotted headstock is something I'll be trying for my next. Yours looks excellent.

Thanks for the kind words guys! The more I play them the more I like them. The OM is a Micheal Payne Plan and the Parlour is Scott Antes plan.

Padauk is a nice wood to work with. My buddy showed up at my shop with a couple of boards that we got 4 sets out of. It bends well but is really porous and as Darrel mentioned it turns the shop orange. It darkened up a lot under finish with a lot of dark streaking. Quite nice looking I think.

Alan, I'm glad I don't live near Allied..... or RC or....... I'd be broke. :D I think a square neck on a steel string body would be very cool. Do it!

Tom, My last parlour ended up in your part of the world with Gordon Stobbe. Host of "Up Home Tonight". I use to live out there myself.

Joe, The neck is Walnut. I wanted something to go with the Rosewood. The top has a bit of amber on it like your last one. I tinted the first coat though.

Haans, I was after a bit of a classic look. Andy has great stuff.

Chris, PM me you email and I'll send you some more pics.

Thanks again,
All The Best

Danny - I was interested in your comment that Padauk bends well. I have sides in the mold for a Padauk guitar right now, and I did not have any trouble bending them in a Fox bender, but I did let it heat up to close to 300 F. I had to do a piece of the same wood for a back plate on a headstock, and I thought that bending for that on a pipe would never happen - the wood just seemed to never want to give. It was by far the hardest wood to bend that I have ever worked with. Comments?

Danny,
I can't believe those are your 4th and 5th! They are outstanding. I am a real fan of the Parlour, and plan to make that for MY 4th (but I'm only 3/4 done with #2 right now).
Thanks for the pics. Really inspiring for a newb like me! Beth

Hey Jim,

Funny, It never occured to me to look into it before bending it but check out the last paragraph of what John has to say.http://www.bluescreekguitars.com/tutorial10.php
I bent it at about 320 -340 in a Fox bender with amost no spring back. I like to let them fully cool, an hour or two, before taking the side out FWIW. Ignorance is bliss idunno

Danny,

That is a pair of SVEEEET guitars! Between you and Mr. Minard you guys are making Powell River the hand made mecca of BC! Nice! I am nearly finished my shed so I can clear out the shop, move the new resaw in and get my guitar making bench back! So hopefully I have something to show by the spring as well! Keep 'em coming! Maybe we can try and get to one of the fiddle camps this year with the kids!?

Shane
