Looking some for real high figure quilted and curly maple tops. Anyone could point me somewhere I could get some?

Thanks,

Peter, check with Jason at CV Tonewoods up in my neck of the woods ;) sponsor link at the top of the page... If not, you could check with Bow river Tonewoods also up in my neck of the woods :D

Several of our sponsors carry maple drop tops at good prices. When the time comes for me, they're who I'll turn to.

Drop top? Do you have local lumber suppliers? Maybe in California this stuff is not prevalent? Out here even the Woodcraft carries high figure curly maple sticks.

Not like you do. A furniture maker told me about a yard in San Fransisco that supposedly has some really nice stuff, but other than that, it's slim picking. Pacific Native is in Winton if we want walnut, though.

Hey Peter,
I used to buy very nice figured woods from a guy named Dale Miller.
Rare woods was his co. name.
He took it over from an old timer,
and it was a part time thing for him.
15 years ago he had SLABS 3"x24"x96" of quilted maple and stuff.
He might not be around anymore.
In Bell, or Maywood or something.
Let me know if he's still doing it.

Don't know th area code.
Great guy.

It is a top you laminate on a solid body guitar that is usually less than half the thickness of the body, and usually with a unique figure that you would not want the whole body made of for economical or weight reasons.

The term "drop top" specifically refers to (in the technical sense) a laminate top that is bent or "dropped" over a carved radius such as a Strat carved arm rest. Several methods are used to bend the top over the body wood. Usually drop tops are only .125" or less thick to facilitate the bending. Flat top woods are generally referred to simply as "laminate" top.
