To make a long story short, I've radiused my back side, glued and carved the bracing on the back, and cut my notches for my braces. The back fits nicely, but there are a couple brace ends with a small gap between the ramp of the end and the notch in the kerfing. I checked my nice Santa Cruz, and there are no gaps. This is my first build, so I'm expecting mistakes, and I'm wondering if there is any significance to the gap other than not using good craftsmanship. Structurally, will there be a problem leaving this gap, or can I just leave it as a mistake? Thanks ahead of time for any advice.

Fill in the gap with a small piece of wood. That will remove structural considerations.

Are you saying that the braces are effectively short or that the lining pockets are too deep?

Coach: Hope you have a set of calipers with a dial scale. I make the ends of the brace a certain height and then when I lay out for cutting my lining notches I mark where the brace crosses the lining. When cutting the notches I measure the brace height at that mark and cut my notches accordingly in the lining. A good use for the depth gague on the dial caliper. On your first go make the notchs a bit shallow(5 or 10 thou.) and after the notches are all cut you can check the fit using a 2 thou feeler on either side of the braces. Either deepen the notch or a bit off the top of brace to fit.When the 2 thou. feeler will not enter on either side of the brace you are OK. Work carefully till you get the feel.Good luck.

Chop the section of kerfing out, clean up the side, glue in a new piece and re-notch for the brace. -- db

Yup the dial calipers are the way to go, full proof every time. A nice steel ruler will work to but jut might get your eyes all buggered up.
