I think I remember Todd Stock doing a test where he applied several coats of epoxy, showing that the grain popped more at each application.

Question is, do you sand between coats and if so, how far? Just nub removal? Or back to wood?

One of my concerns is witness lines (and or splotch).

Hi Mike,

I would say you should be sanding back to the wood after each application. I don't use epoxy and instead use pumice. I still sand to the wood where needed.

I just scuff and try really hard not to go through to the wood. Splotchiness can definitely be an issue. Some people thin their final coat 50/50 with alcohol and wipe it on. This can help even out splotchiness.

I sand back to the wood but I do it VERY carefully so as not to open up more pores. I apply two coats and do not use a final coat of thinned epoxy. I have no blotching issues nor do I have problems with having to drop fill a bunch of new pores. You just have to have a light touch when you break through the epoxy onto the wood surface (I'm using P320). My goal is to fill the pores and ONLY the pores.
