Who, other than LMI sells veneer sheets in .3 and .6mm equivalent thicknesses in a maple or say cypress. I find that LMI's white is too fibrous and doesn't scrape or sand cleanly and picks up colored sawdust more readily requiring fairly aggressive scraping of purfling lines prior to top coating. Suggestions?

This may be a characteristic of the veener due to the process by which it is produced. Therefore all veener may behave the same as your present product.

Tom, I didn't have this problem before I began using their veneer.

Try Herzog veneer, or use holly.

Constantines sells Holly veneer. It's easy enough to thickness it to .3 mm. It comes at about .54 - .6 mm.

Only place I know that sells thin veneer is http://www.lenderink.com/wood_veneer/micro_thin.html Not sure if they are set up for small quantities though.

I get most of my standard 1/40" thickness from http://certainlywood.com/index.cfm

The Veneer Store has some interesting veneers also. I think they're around .020" though.

Can you consistently thickness veneers down to 0.010" on a thickness sander? I have only ever gone down to 0.035" and that was kind of sketchy but it was not my machine so IDK how good it was. Making purflings is something I want to learn to do but kind of perplexes me in some aspects.

Would balsa or bass wood be too soft to use for a white line? Specifically, I'm thinking of the white line in a B/W/B layer under a heel cap.

I use a Gilbert Disk Sander on my Drill press to thin veneer easily to .020 or .5 mm. You have to treat it with kid gloves, but it's not all that hard to do. I have thinned to about .3 mm on a couple of occasions, but at that thickness it has no body, so the sander wants to rip it apart.
