Following the excellent tutorials posted by Todd and Hesh, I spent the day making a shooting board, familiarizing myself with hand planing techniques, then jointing and gluing up three sets of top plates. What a fun day! This was my first time tackling these steps and without the generous spirit and wise guidance of you two fine gentlemen I never would have mustered the courage to try. Thanks so much!

Since people like pics, I snapped a shot of the shooting board and my new/old Stanley #5.

George :-)

Wow are you related in any way to Hesh? I aspire to be that clean and orderly!

That is a great pic too the kind of pic that makes me wanna make some saw dust (and then clean it up..... :D :? ).

Guitars sound and play better when coming from a clean shop.... beehive :)

Off to mop my shop...

Ha! Pictures lie, fellas. :-) I do clean up sawdust and shavings and such, but can only dream of having a workspace that is as nice and tidy as the one our friend Hesh has built for himself.

As a child I spent countless hours exploring the many drawers and compartments of that old box, but I've never noticed a mark or badge -- I'll have to check again. I love the look of it and it is one of the few things I have that belonged to my father, so it holds great sentimental value for me. I think he would be pleased to find it sitting atop my workbench.

Mike,
I wondered about that, but thought it would be okay if the blade was retracted. I can see how that might be a dangerous habit. Point taken and thanks for the tip.
