Would a couple layers of .010 veneer be enough backing support for a sound port that is just an oval shape or will I need a layer of wood?

I have seen people use no backing at all. But I like to use at least some. I usually don't use any less than .060" though. But maybe that just me.

I just theorizing here...but if the port is on a curve it will be stronger than if it was on a flat area. However, since end grain is exposed, I think it is a good idea to protect it from splitting. Any veneer would be better than none. I've never done a oval soundhole, so I've always backed mine with 2 .10 veneers B/W. I'm sure you will be fine with or without. It is more about insurance than anything.

Paul, I agree with Tracy... you can stack a couple of layers of veneer and match your binding and purflings for a little extra flair..
I have seen them with no backing at all but I prefer a bit of insurance. The layers of veneer can be installed cross grain to each other for a high degree of strength.

I use either veneers, 20-40 thou, or sometimes and most often just a couple cross braces near where the hole will be.

My house guitar (OM) had one added long after it was built .... no reinforcement, and its fine. I wouldnt want to hit it there, but in normal use it wont do anything.
