Some kind of pine, for sure.

The color could looks like Goncalo alves, but the grain is different.

So I'd say: Purpleheart? Eat Drink

My vote is for some species of larch (tamarack, western, European, Japanese, Euro-Jap hybrid). No one has mentioned hemlock?

Wow! Great guesses....but all wrong, sorry! It does look a bit like slanted sand dunes, doesn't it?! :D

Daniel asked a pertinant question (how big is the sample in the photo?). It's about 2" square.

I can say that one of the guesses was close.....but not which one yet.....I'll keep you guessing until later tonight. If no one gets it by then, I'll reveal the answer.

Cheers,
Dave F.

Dang it, Dave! I was sitting there staring at that trying to think of what kind of tree grew in a place that had quick season changes to get such sharp edges on both sides of the winter growth lines laughing6-hehe
Not to mention trying to imagine the 3-dimensional shape of that weird grain pattern. I should have posted to complain about how it looked so unnatural.

I'm torn between anger for faking us out, and laughing my rear end off laughing6-hehe
