Acetone will evaporate in seconds, so it must be some residue on the windshield.

That's a timely question, I was thinking of using acetone to clean some windows... Bad idea?

wow. straight to the acetone huh? It must be residue though, as stated. The acetone would've evap'ed immediately.
Strongest I ever used on my windshield was Xylene when a tree bled all over the window leaving a horrible glaze of residue on the entire windshield wiper area. In the end pinesol and time was what cleared it up the best.
I hope you're careful not to get any near paint or plastic areas!

For sticky goop/residue on windows I usually try Naptha first since it's fairly safe around finishes and plastic.

Home Depot used to have it. I bought my last at Lowes. It is sold as VM&P Naphtha (Varnish Makers and Painters). Also called lighter fluid.

Funny! I never knew there were so many "AKAs" for naptha. For some strange reason I have always associated "moth balls" and naptha without knowing why. Must be a "fog of ebulliently imbibed" rememberance of the Deer Hunter. "I Love the smell of napalm in the morning!".

Confused, yes! But having fun.

Mike

Acetone won't touch glass! But! If the glass has tinting film applied to the inside it will attack that! If this is the case you may have to have the window retinted.

They've got it a Home Depot up here, check the paint department at the store down there Mike.

Mike,
The reason you associated mothballs and naphtha is that mothballs used to be made of naphthalene. However, naphthalene is a specific hydrocarbon compound, while naphtha is a hydrocarbon distillate or mixture of compounds.

Thanks, Tom!

Now, please go to work on the silicon (element) vs silicone ( polymer that includes silicon together with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sometimes other chemical elements) thing, which seems to be a problem area for about half the population, including TV & radio talking heads!
gaah

Cheers

Low quality (hardware store) Acetone is frequently contaminated with water containing minerals. If contaminated it will leave a hazy film on the surface.

This film will be water soluble and can likely be cleaned using distilled water (perhaps with a little added Vinegar).

If it is a really stubborn stain, it may take some time to go back into solution. If so you can place a wet towel over the window for 15-30 min and then clean up.

it will get it wet

Am I missing something ? Distilled or DI water won't affect the paint or the wax. (unless your kids painted the car using tempera paint)
