I've got some zebrawood boards in the garage, and I don't think it will be that great for guitars- very marked hard/soft areas in the boards.
My recommendation would be to 'surrender' on this one and save the 'points' for when you find that pile of rosewood/ebony/blackwood!

Just go ahead & build that shop you've been dreaming of. Then you won't HAVE to take the stuff into the house!

Easy answer - replacing the zebrawood in future is alot less $ than replacing the Wife ;-)

laughing6-hehe

I've got the CanadaPost parcel guy pretty well trained - if the garage (power tool shop) door is open or ajar, he delivers the parcels to the garage instead of ringing the front doorbell!

My wife is actually very understanding, so this is all by way of joking....We are lucky to be able to indulge a lot of our hobbies, in moderation.

However, life did get more complicated when she retired and was home to answer the front door most of the day!

My wife said if I bought any more guitar wood she was gonna leave me.....I sure will miss her. bliss

The real trick with any of this stuff. Wood, tools, firearms, etc is to have so much 'stuff' she can't tell new from old.

Waddy- Nice looking guitar! (as usual.. [:Y:] )

I think there may be several woods that are referred to as 'zebrawood' - my stuff is much more black&white, with very rowed (opposing) grain lines. The white wood is almost cottony/fuzzy in spots.

Cheers
John

I've never messed with zebrawood, but if it stinks and you'll be storing it where she can smell it, then you better just get over it and concede. Don't want a constant reminder for her to be irritated at your addiction :)

Or compromise and ask her if you can buy just one set if you build it into something immediately, so it's not sitting around for a long time.

My wife said something to me ONCE!

All I heard was, "Honey, blah blah blah blah" beehive

Now she doesn't say anything..................she just gives me "the look"

Most of my scars are healed now!

I think Zebrawood makes a beautiful sounding and looking guitar. I have heard of it smelling like a wet dog when you cut it, but I didn't notice any foul odors when I cut it.

Here is two that I did from the same piece of wood. The first photo without finish a next two with finish.

I say go for it.

Looks like I'm going to have to just sneak it in and blame the smell on a loose toilet connection or something.... laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

My one experience with Zebra Wood was malodorous to put it nicely. It smelled like an entire herd of Zebras gathered under the tree this wood came from...it smelled like horse urine.

Looks are super! ....Swimmers nose plugs would be worth the investment for the family during the build.
Maybe if you didn't shower for a couple weeks....the smell would overpower the Zebra wood and a then you would be the problem....not the wood. Which Wood be worse?

My wife doesn't like it either, until she sees what it can become...

I have more problems with my guitars. We have a very small house. When we married I sold two guitars (electric factory things) because of the space and sayd I wouldn't buy others. Within a year my friends gave me two other guitars. oops_sign

She told me not to bring it in the house once.
so I ramped up a 2 x12
Rode it through the front door, into the living room.
Revd it few times, dropped the kick stand
and told her if she didn't like it ,
the front door was still open.

duh

For me, the wife wins, hands down. You can't sleep with the zebrawood.

Seems to me your first project should be to make a fanny paddle out in the garage.

When it's done....do whatever you want.

laughing6-hehe I can relate to this. Actually, my wife has never complained. She certainly can't keep up with the count of guitars. idunno I don't complaint (out loud) about her regular $200 or $300 clothing shopping sprees  (and clothing has zero asset value once you wear it), so why should she complain about tools or guitars or guitar parts that at least have some (or much) asset value? ;)

Zebrawood is awesome...I didn't notice any bad smell at all. It can be a bit brittle and porous...but other than that, I think it's great. I didn't do any pore filler and just did a satin French polish...it looks really nice.

Nice classical, Opus! Maybe I'll dig out those zebrawood boards some day soon.

I like the heelcap treatment - original and tasteful.

Cheers
