Just have to get one thing out of my chest. WHY are so many people so caught up in the word POLICY I so hate that word, why cant we by humans instead, I know there are good reasons at times for having policies, BUT we are woodworkers for crying out loud. I may be living in a fairytale world at times with my way of seeing the world but nowadays the suit people are getting so many, especially as even woman are wearing mens clothes (suits) :D . rules and regulations. we need to get back to earth and stick policies up the behind of the suits. there´s a a store I know in the far north of sweden , the owner still use a basket with a note in it. saying Put the money here. - and people do that ! perhaps we should start trusting in people more instead of being on the edge waiting for someone to make a mistake. and when we are at it- throw away the TV:s and newspapers.
we are passionated woodworkers, so f the policies of the suits and golddiggers. .

now I´ve had my outburst of the day. time for coofee. laughing6-hehe

Lars.

Lars,

I will remind you that it is OLF policy that topics not relating directly to lutherie be posted in the off topic forum.

Cheers and keep well.

There are still those who put out the basket. Just the other day Shane (High Mountain Tonewood) sent my order before I ever paid for it. I enjoy doing business with people like that. It seems to me the hardest ones to deal with are the Policy, Rules and Regulation makers. beehive

Lars,
I completely understand where you are coming from. However, all it takes is getting burned a few times and then you realize the need for a skeptical outlook.

It truly is a shame that people can no longer be trusted anymore -- but the thing is that we aren't being skepticalwithout reason. Time and time again, things happen that prove the wisdom of having a cautious and discerning eye.

Of course, there are areas that seem to be much more "old fashioned" when it comes to integrity and principles. I wouldn't mind moving to one those places!!!

So then......a prodigy or just progeny?

More handsome than I - in any case.

I get the rant. Policy is the antithesis of self-discipline.

It's not there for the ones with self-discipline, it's there for those without it. In a world full of honest people, we wouldn't need laws.

Yes...but don't you mean, "it's not 'created' for those with self-discipline?"

Alas, for we Lars's....policies are applied to the externally AND internally motivated alike, to the moral AND the amoral alike.

...an insult which often provokes those who strive to live by principals. :x

Don't you mean 'principles' ?
;)
That's about the only contribution I can make- this whole thread seems to be on a different 'astral plane' from the one I inhabit.
Perhaps it's an age thing? [uncle] [uncle]

Lars,
For many folks, policies are a hindrance. They add to more administration and therefore cost to the product or service. As Simon pointed out, policies are needed to protect oneself. In 'gubment' work, there are all kinds of folks making policy... in fact, people are hired just to make policy. This policy, once established, protects the agency, business owner, etc. from frivolous discrimination and like lawsuits. While the suits can still be brought, if the policy is applied equally to all, a discrimination or other suit will likely fail. Let's say on the other hand, I treat my customers differently when dealing with them and charge differently depending on the day or my mood or their hair color. This lack of policy will lead to difficult times if I run into the wrong customer with the aclu on the speed-dial. One never knows who's feelings I could hurt next! By applying a policy to offend all customers, I could easily avoid being sued for some sort of quasi-discrimination... although, guitars probably wouldn't fly out of the shop. Policy is also a way to keep customers from feeling screwed. If there is some action taken by the business that a customer doesn't like or understand, the customer may harbor bad feelings because of the experience. If the customer understands that there is a policy in place that caused this, they may be more understanding and will definitely know they weren't singled out.

Good luck with your anti-policy policy.
