Finally learn the latter half of this little piece. It was played with the retopped guitar and it came out better than my expectation.

Over the weekend I got my binding jig built out of leftover junk to work, and like a virgin, I cut binding channels for the very first time. I made it thru the wilderness, somehow I made it through. And now I'm posting these pics, I'm posting them all for you.

Yes. On a test piece the bearing left a harsh-looking groove, and I was a little worried about tear out on the top, so I went overboard with tape. I turned out really good though.

What kind of bit did you use and how thick is the back?

I used a freud flush cutting bit and swapped out the bearing with a smaller one, to get a 1/16" channel.

I don't actually know how thick my back is. I bought it pre-thicknessed from John Hall.

First off, if you are happy with your results cutting thru the tape - Ignore me and go with what works for you.

If your bearing is leaving a track, there is likely a problem with the bearing or setup. I believe the Freud bearings have a seperate dust shield that goes between the bearing and the bit. Is the track from the bearing or the dust shield ?

There are a couple of reasons I don't cut thru tape:

if the bearing is riding on the tape, you can get a bump at seams or where the tape overlaps
if you cut thru the tape, pieces of the tap can end up on the bearing surface and cause irregular rabbet
if the tape residue mucks up the cutting edge, you can get tear-out on the back (or top) plus the bit will wear quickly.
cutting thru tape can result in fuzzy edges since the tape doesn't like to cut cleanly. removing the tape can cause tearout since the edge isn't as clean as it could be.

the track came from the bearing. i removed the dust shield. maybe my bearing stopped turning. i didn't overlap any tape. my channels aren't perfect, but I was happy with them for a first time effort. thanks for this advice. I will continue to tweak.

I'm not all that keen on your donut either. That's a pretty big gap from the bearing to the shoe opening. And a pretty wide span across the opening that rides on the guitar's edge. I'm wondering how that would effect the channel height at the waist and taper of the of the back. I've read discussions about it being tricky to keep the binding channel heigth even at the taper. I'm wondering if it isn't because of the use of a 1" bit and the bearing kits being used to cut the channel and the wider bearing of the donut / shoe. I use a 1/4" spiral downcut bit and a edge bearing setup with a small shoe bearing area and I really haven't noticed that. But that's another subject for another discussion I guess.

I'm new to building, but here is my two firsts. Acoustic with maple B&S and western red cedar top, solid body maple with cherry stripes. The acoustic top & back are five pieces, made from wood I had laying around... it may not be the best way but its my first and it for me bliss
