i was flying on this one for a while and have been at a standstill for a few weeks now. gonna try and get the fretboard bound today. i think i just got burned out from working late at night after the wife and kids go to bed. theres only so many days in a row you can live on 5 or less hours of sleep. thats me anyway.

the shape is an OM, but will have a 12 fret body joint and slotted peg head. 1/2" more depth than the standard OM as well.

b&s - honduran mahogany
top - adi
binding and end wedge - cocobolo
purfling - sycamore and cocobolo
rosette, radial purfling, and back strip - quilted sapele
bridge, fretboard, and headplate will be mad rose

I did the same thing, work after my wife and daughter went to sleep for a while, got some work done for a bit, but just got worn out and a little sick, been cutting back on the long hard nights of lutherie myself, one more plane shaving for the road adds up after a while. Great looking guitar, the work looks really clean.

Looks great Heath! Did you make the purflings? I have been thinking of buying veneer sheets and a pasta cutter to make my own so I was curious how you made yours. I really like how the cocobolo and sycamore look together

i actually did make the purflings. i had a bit of a hard time with it though. the sycamore is a veneer sheet from LMI that i cut into strips with a straight edge and razor blade. i got about half as many strips as i probably shoud have, because i ruined quite a few. ive heard of others having better success with that method than i did, however. your mileage may vary. the cocobolo is actually just pieces of binding cut in half and then sent through the drum sander. not the most economical or green method, but i just needed a few pieces.

the rosette, top purfling and back strip are all cross grain quilted sapele. i definitely didnt come up with the idea and probably didnt execute it as well as most either. i think there are some topics on the subject in the archives if you search under "radial purfling." the top purfling is done with a teflon filler strip just the way you would if you were installing shell. you remove the teflon strip after the binding is on, leaving you a channel in which to install the strips of cross grain wood of your choosing. the rosette is sort of the same deal. heres a picture of what it looks before its cut into a circle and fit into the channel. hope that helps.
