Finish by Joe White (This is Joe's new cat poly product and it is simply beautiful!) with a satin neck (super fast and the most comfortable finish I have EVER felt on a neck).

It sounds really big and Hesh if you read this, yes it is really LOUD! It is a balanced tone and sounds great when strummed. It has a wonderful shimmer to it without being too bright. It has a big bottom end that you can feel in your gut, but doesn't get boomy. I am very pleased with the improvement of sound over my first. The bracing is much lighter and the guitar really does feel more responsive. I play very lightly and it responds very well to a light fingerstyle as well.

I like the tiger myrtle and I really like the choices that you made for the rosette, binding and purfling. It's very understated but in my opinion the combination that you used works really well together and makes for a very beautiful guitar.
What have you got picked out for number 3?

Ok this was my attempt at a joke, but maybe I would prefer that space filled with an extra fret or two.

Other than this it looks gorgeous and workmanship pretty darn good for a second

So you see what I mean about how some of us have experienced a pretty loud guitar when using Tiger Myrtle back and sides? I'm also wondering if you can recall if your TM tapped like wet cardboard prior to building with it - mine does and did.

Congratulations Dan! That is a superb second effort and the Tiger Myrtle is over the top. The radial purfling was a great choice to complement the rosette and the photograph of the end wedge really shows off the fantastic figure of the wood. Great job and keep up the good work!!

I love the lines of the guitar and the lens you used to capture it. Did you do a mockup to see what the fret markers would look like if they spanned the entire distance of the fret instead of being centered in the middle of space?

Thank you all for such nice comments. I am very proud of this guitar but more than that, it was a built for my brother and he loves it. There is nothing like the feeling of seeing the new owner open up the case for the first time and get a gigantic grin on his face. It was really awesome

I'll try to answer the questions everyone asked so far.

A friend asked me to build two guitars for him, an Englemann/Oregon Myrtle OLF-SJ and a Lutz Spruce/Oregon Myrtle OLF-SJ so those will be Numbers 3 and 4 (one is a surprise gift for one of his friends). Then Number 5 is a Sinker Redwood/Cocobolo OLF-MJ. I am going to try to build all three somewhat in parallel.


I never even thought about putting frets at the bottom but I am going to try it on the next. I totally see what you mean about that. Great suggestion

Yes, it is the OLF-SJ. The SJ is a little bit larger and has a curvier body shape. Others can comment better than I about the OM as I have never built one.



No, my brother picked out this inlay and we basically copied it from the fretboard inlay on his Gretsch acoustic. I think it turned out pretty cool and on the finished guitar looks more elegant than I thought it would. I tend to prefer a plain fretboard, but I ended up really liking this one.
