After all those replies, what can I say?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Dave, a most excellent add to your impressive growing number of builds. I agree with other comments here – sweet, particularly your approach to the finish. I am not a big fan of the heavy older bursts either...black on an acoustic guitar just kills appearance n’est pas? That baby would be well worth the drive to Acton, with a pit stop in Milton :)

Have you used Lutz on an archtop before? How does it compare tonally to euro or sitka spruce?

That's a beauty Dave!!! How many arch tops is that for you? I just noticed in the photo of the burst, it looks like a bolt on neck? Is that what it is?

Cheers,
Danny

I appreciate the compliments guys ....very encouraging.
Anthony, great to hear from you! Drop by, if you can. This is my 5th in Lutz. Seems very comparible to sitka but lighter & with better uniformity of appearance.
Danny, this is a dovetail ...I prefer bolt-on but this has no endpin hole (due to the tailpiece style) and, with smaller f-holes, access for a bolt-on was a problem.

Dave-

I love your guitar. I have a '39 Cromwell G4 (Gibson L-50 with mahogany back/sides/neck) and our guitars could be siblings. Mine, of course, has a darker burst but you just nailed that 30's archtop vibe. Really sweet man. If you have any other pictures, please post them.

Thanks Dave, I've heard some good things about that lumber yard in the past just never got around to visiting them. I might do some browsing this weekend. Would be nice to pick up some of that maple.

Much appreciated.

Wow - love the 'burst. Nice and understated, and love the grain coming through.

Many thanks for all the wonderful replies... I'm humbled.
Christoph, missed your question ... the binding is ABS. My "clearcoats" are all tinted with a drop of amber (per 300ml) so, at the end, everything is "warm" and the binding has a lovely light cream colour.
