This is my latest completion... late 1920's (ie 16") L5 flavour, with trapese tailpiece, smaller L5 f-holes, traditional shape finger rest, open-back tuners, parallel bracing, tobacco 'burst. Other than a nice lutz top (from Shane), the wood used is really just lumber yard stuff... the back was a plank of decent curly I happened to have (not even book-matched). It came out light (for me)... 3.8lb. before hardware, and is really a sweet. rich sounding guitar, even at this early stage.
Took a bit different approach on the sunburst ... many older 'bursts look a bit heavy handed to my eye (brown/black paint around the edges with a lighter bit in the center). I wan't to see more of the woods character, so I sprayed the 'burst with dyes in water onto bare wood. (Twice actually... first was 90% sanded off for depth.) Shellac after, then EM6000 (my first use).
Hope you like it.

Dave, you have immaculate taste. From the burst, lovely lines, pick guard and simple tailpiece - it just all works. I hope you don't mind it if I try to emulate your choices.

Awesome. I don't normally like burst, but yours is great. BTW, the guitar in your avatar is simply stunning. The color is awesome.

Dave, you wouldn't be willing to share the name of that lumber yard would you? ;-)

Gorgeous find and a beautiful creation.

The Lutz's goes without saying.

Thanks again guys.
I was feeling my way a bit on the 'burst (I'm sure a lot more experienced guys can chime in) but basically it's a 3 colour burst....amber on all, red mahogony on all but "highlights, and tobacco brown on perimeters/"darks". A light touch and invisible "blends" are the key ... as many sessions as it takes!
Attachment:
burst.jpg

The final step (I think after the picture as I studied it some more) was a few drops of black added to the tobacco mix and airbrushed to give some added darkness to the edges / waist etc. (The final sunburst was the result of 12 seperate sessions all together and before sealing)
