Nice guitar Colin -- I love maple guitars!

Why thank you Ken! I love them too actually. It does look a bit like maple in my photos.
But if you read the txt, it's actually Silkwood, so-called presumably because the flame looks almost like silk material draped in folds. It's more yellow than Maple, heavy and as hard as nails (as I have 2 ruined knife blades to bear witness).
I'll try (or get my wife too) take a decent photo when it's finished.

From my end, got the claro walnut all buffed out and last night strung it up for the first time. Got the action close, but I'll wait another week or two before really dialing it in.

I wasn't in the shop yesterday, my buddy Tim and I took a road trip to a couple wood suppliers up here in Ontario and I spent a little more money than I planned but I am sure you all can relate to that.

On Thursday I helped Tim glue the binding on his 1st guitar, he was quite nervous routing the body, but it came out real good. The StewMac true channel binding system, and the LMI cutter and bearing set is a real easy to use set up, I showed him how I hold the body and move it past the cutter, and get the router on and off the guitar and away he went. After our return yesterday he took the body home to Detroit to pull the binding tape and scrape everything level. The border gestapo must be getting to know him real well as he has been over a couple times a week for the last couple months.

I have enjoyed teaching Tim as much as building myself, and I have found I also learned a lot while explaining things to him. It is great to see his excitement as the guitar comes together, though it is only 4 years since my 1st I had kind of forgot the thrill each stage of build gave me. I can't wait to we can jam with it.

I hope he gets some photos on Photobucket so we can share with you guys.

Fred

I've been spending some time with my CAD program. I'm working on a simple fretboard inlay, but I got a little carried away with the model. The board is a compound radius 10 to 20" so I had to model each fret individually. Over the top, but good practice. I'm thinking I'll try cutting the inlays out of aluminum. It won't hold a shine, but I think it would look pretty cool.

Ken, that Claro Walnut looks great! Is there any flame? More pics please....

I have cut the rosette on my next - a bit of zipflex with a curly bubinga core on another fine example of Shanes Lutz:

Colin -- Guess I should read the text and not just drool over the pictures!

Robbie -- For the previous build, I did an almost identical rosette using curly Koa and zipflex. I really like that style, simple yet with touch of bling! I took a few pictures of the claro walnut yesterday. I'll try to get some posted in a separate thread this evening. But yes, it does have some flame.

Ken

I have become a resawing addict !

I picked up some walnut and some scrap cherry (total $37) and resawed it into enough wood for at least 2 maybe even 3 guitars, and I have walnut left over for headstocks... resawing is too much fun ! Loving my new 14" Delta - does exactly what I wanted to do !!

Now i have to get back to thinning the maple I resawed last week ! and keep building my first two guitars ! But I am happy I will have plenty of wood stickered for guitars #3, #4, and #5! bliss

It's a fret board slotting setup using a radial arm saw. The paper template is printed out from a fret calculator program and is cut out and taped to the board. I'd put the guard or some kind of guard back on the saw but maybe it's off just for the picture and some kind of hold down would be nice. Other then that it's fine.

Sorry, I took the guard off to change the blade, then took the picture. It is a very easy cut. The teeth on Shanes blades are numerous, small and have no kerf. I cut each slot, turn off the saw, move the board push the saw back, replace board, align, turn on the saw, make new cut. I could probably do it by hand as fast.

I was waiting to do these pictures until I got the trivia prize from Michael printed and hung. This is my new shop, a big blank canvas with cell like cement walls, cool in the summer, not too cold in the winter. I will slowly bring tools from the old shop and storage in as needed and weather permitting. This facility will be set up for lutherie, and I believe there is room enough to share with a student when the time comes. There is similar space on the other side of the painted wall, perhaps a better space with more electric wired, a side door and more windows, might make a move at some point, but for now our landlord is letting me use this and keep the other shop out in the yard, he is willing to rent this to me for $400/month, 1250 square feet. I pay for it by renting out the storage units that are on the same property, annoying but it is not too likely that I will end up having to pay anything after my commissions.

Wow, nice space with high ceilings for storage.

Better get some white paint to umm... brighten up the place.

And perhaps trompe l'Oeil paintings of windows on the walls...to let in some more light.

laughing6-hehe

Sorry dude, couldn't resist.

Blessings
