The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Thanks! I'm feeling pretty good about it so far.

I got a lot done today but kept forgetting to take the camera out to the shop. I got the first coat of lacquer on the body, and got the fingerboard all ready to glue to the neck:

Thanks fellas! I do like how this one is turning out. That top looks good enough to eat. :D

Well, this is the last set of pics for awhile. I'll finish spraying it in the next couple days, and then let it dry for a few weeks.

Now that the lacquer has cured for a month, I'm back at it with number 3. Should string it up tomorrow!


Today I sanded it from 400 grit through 2000, and then buffed everything but the top, which I'll do after gluing on the neck/fingerboard and bridge.

I decided to leave the top with a satin finish.

I haven't played it a lot yet, but so far I'm pretty pleased. It's louder than my first classical. Seems more responsive too.
