Does anyone know if Gibsons Jumbo and Advanced Jumbo has the same body shape and size? I know there are differences in scale length but are the length, bouts and waists the same size?
I want to buy a mold and bending form from Blues Creek for an AJ but all he has is Jumbo.

The Gibson J-200 style Jumbo and the Gibson AJ are entirely different. If you are looking for the AJ style, his Slope Shoulder Dread pattern will do the trick. It shares the shape of a J-45 as well as the AJ (within an 1/8th inch here or there). A Gibson J-200 style is shaped more like a mega-OM, so that's not what you're after. The Gibson AJ is f'ing amazing, the only new acoustic I've ever bought, and it still blows me away every time I pick it up...

An Advanced Jumbo is both wider, and longer. I'll get the exact differences off of my templates later when I'm in my shop. I assume you're refering to a J45 as a Jumbo. I can send you (or John) a half body template of an Advanced Jumbo.

The Gibson Advanced Jumbo and the J series dreds were the same size , the J 200 and J 185 are a different class of guitar and are not dreds . This is according to the books , the difference was the woods used and the decoration between the advanced Jumbo and the J series..

Maybe Gibson has changed them in recent years. Meddlingfools dimensions are the same as my 1964 J-50, and the "J" mold from bluescreek I recently got from Matthewrust. I made a template off of a limited Braz RW Advanced Jumbo from the late 90's I re fretted a couple years ago.
Heres the late 90's AJ dimension, and the dimensions of my 1964 J50 ( A J50 is a J45 without the 'burst)

Lower bout 16 1/8" 16"
Upper bout 11 1/2" 11 1/2"
Waist 10 3/4" 10 5/8"
body length 20 3/16" 20 1/16"

Maybe because of the difference in years, the depth is the same on both. 4 15/16" to 3 15/16" I'm pretty sure modern J45's aren't that deep, but AJ's are.


The angle of the "X" on the AJ is 105 degrees, and the intersection is 8 3/8" from the 14th fret(edge of body) The angle of the "X" on the J50 is 100 degrees, and the intersection is 8 7/8" from the 14th fret. The soundhole on the AJ is ~1/8" bigger, and ~1/2" further forward (toward the neck)

I've seen (and played) 2 old (pre war) AJ's but I haven't been able to measure them.
