am⋅a⋅teur  /ˈæməˌtʃʊər, -tʃər, -tər, ˌæməˈtɜr/ –noun
- a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.

Seems that there have been some hardball questions around here lately so I'm going to continue the trend:
How many of you professional builders would continue to build some instruments if you couldn't make another dollar?

Stated differently: Have you fulfilled your hobbyest goals as a builder?

Follow-up question: What would you build if you were just a an amateur again? Perhaps something other than a guitar?

(not that I'm wishing that upon any of you btw ;))

Mark

Guitarmaking for me is a passion!
I'd give them away if I could afford too.

I'm still learning so that makes me a student still.

I am an amature builder , I build what I like and if some one wants to buy it ok , if not thats ok too . so i guess from that stand point , either I will never be a pro , or making money really doesnt make any diffrence in the aspect of building . Amature or Pro for me

I've been a professional (mandolin) builder for 12 years (meaning I quit my day job), before that a professional tinkerer (hobbyist), while working full time as a cabinetmaker (30yrs). Before that I was a repairperson and guitar builder. Now I will retire to Social Security, and turn back to a hobbyist.
It will be a relief to get out from under deadlines again... bliss
