I love the drill bit to help with the neck angle!

The "Norwegian Wood" mandola is just about done...

Back.

Yup, that is a big ol' knot on that birch back. I'm going to put a set of tuners that cost $62 on this instrument, and still have the whole thing cost less than $100. Beggars can't be choosers!

I have some stuff going on. I have spent pretty much the whole month reorganizing and making improvements. I redid the dust collection, added a wynn filter, built a new downdraft table and router extension, put up a ton of shelving etc.... I bought an old walker turner jointer for very little money on craigslist and have been slowly (real slowly) working on getting the beds perfectly flat and in plane. I did take the whole thing apart and clean it and that was very educational.

I have a little ziricote guitar that has been taking forever to get finally finished. I have had the final coats on for a month or so and finally have a buffer on the way to finish it off. I just got my first baritone (with my first armrest bevel) back from Joe and I am about to add the bridge and set it up. I am interested to see how it will sound. I have a good number in the queue to begin working on now including my sonic sitka set which I am excited about starting.

My girlfriend and I are going on a money fast for Feb so I expect some good shop time in the month to come! Very few outside distractions and some nice savings at the end of the month for the upcoming wedding. It seems strange to be excited for it but i am (the fast, not the wedding).

I may start cutting and prepping some wood for the swapmeet if we have it too. I have a few Madrose sets I may sell and I still have some nice tuner button and bridge pin sets.

Here's something I'm trying to get ready for Miami.
It's a Sinker redwood top which will be going on a Celebes ebony body (SJ model). The rosette is also Celebes ebony, bordered by pale red ab.

Here's the back:

And you've seen the inlay, but I need to brag on Craig Lavin at least one more time--here's his Lily of the Valley, set in a Celebes ebony board:

Thanks,

I have nothing so fancy as that! My shop is a mess while we're trying to finish off half of the basement. I'm waiting on a motor to arrive so I can set up my Craigslist bargain bandsaw (from off-topics forum). And tomorrow, I'm starting 2 new guitars off the OLF MJ plans. Awesome plans by the way. Thanks for doing those Michael. I do have a few questions I'll post up after they've had a chance to roll around in my brain a bit.

I have a parlor on the back burner that is waiting for me to cut the mortise and tenon. I've got the jig built, but still need to make a template for it.

Mike

I am doing a J45 build with a group over on the "Other" Luthier forum...
Rims are bent, head and tail blocks are in, back and top are jointed up.

Just got the head and tail blocks on the rims and the back (6-pc) jointed up.

Here is the completed box for for my Bubinga OM size cutaway wedge, the neck ls now completed and I can start the final sanding and it will be ready for pore filling. I put some Z-poxy on a scrap of bubinga and it looks real good I can't wait to see the whole guitar done. I love the way the Z-poxy brings the wood to life.

Really nice work.

BTW, I recommend a thin, flexible caul between your go bars and the back or top, to get more even pressure distribution. I use 1/4" hardboard.

Very nice work everyone! Very cool projects going on. I just closed the box on a Redwood/Koa SJ. It is a custom shape that I really liked. This is a new rosette that I've always wanted to try. Similar to Michihiro Matsuda's design. Mine is a lot more simple. Anyway, next up is the binding this week.

I just finished my first attempt at spraying a guitar.

I'm using KTM-9 waterbase with the Fuji HVLP system (Thanks for the reccomendation Michael Payne).

So far it was a lot of fun and went a lot better than expected. I'm in the curing stage now and plan to wait a full 2 weeks before leveling and buffing.

A bit of a mess right now (but nothing like Hesh's messy shop ;) )

I'm nearing the finishing stage of the longest guitar build in history. Coming on to 4 years now with it (ouch wow7-eyes ) But I'm ready to start finishing now.

Wow Rod, that is fantastic! Better late than never is my motto. It took me 2 1/2 years to finish my last guitar, so I know the feeling. What is the wood on the back, it is superb? Is this one for you?

Thanks Tracy,

This guitar is for a friend. She's been very patient. The back is Imbuia from Uncle Bob (who else has wood like this, Ya!?)

I'm not sure if this thread is guitars only... but anyway, here's what's new in my shop:

Image
Brand new fret bender; works like a charm

Image
A '66 Fender Mustang carrying an interesting story. Dakota Red was its original color, but in the mid seventies there was this revolution in Portugal and no one was allowed to play red guitars (we had this thing about communism Eat Drink ). So, the guitar was sprayed over with a nasty blue, which was covered in black when its current owner (the son of the original one) was a teenager. The guitar is now in for a full restoration. Its going to be refretted, new bone nut, and to strip all that finish down and refinish it in Daphne Blue.

And a bunch of new JET tools. Combo sander, radial drill press and dust collection (yet to be hooked up).
Image

Can't really wait to start building some prototypes...

Congrats to everyone... some really nice work being done, gentlemen! [:Y:] [clap]

(There's also a bunch of stuff around that I did not photograph. An Ibanez acoustic from the late 70s that's in for a fretjob and nut, a Vox AC30 for repair, a Laney VH100R with reverb problems and also terribly biased, an original Mutron III, Big Muff and Small Clone - all 70s - all begging for a little TLC).

An Explorer that's still in the same state it was in the last one of these posts... idunno

And the soldering iron. The neighbor dropped off 4 guitars for some pick up swaps and creative wiring changes, and one for a refinish. He's almost got all the finish off for me [:Y:] and wants Tru-Oil rubbed out with steel wool.

Curious - why not restore to its original color?

Filippo

I tried to persuade the costumer in order to restore its original color, but he doesn't fancy dakota red and prefers the other color the Fender Mustang was being offered back in the day, which is daphne blue.

#4 is now in the solera, and braces are glued and carved. Ready for side bending and doing some assembling.
