Thanks Steve and Hesh, it's a good story looking back on it, sometimes in the midst of the work it
didn't seem so interesting....
I wish I could tell you about the history of those repairs but I'm pretty sure it was within the last 15 years or
so. Amazing that someone would think that was a good idea. That bridgeplate fit all the way to the
X-brace intersection and nearly to the one tone bar. I love the calculations written on the top of the plate,
"let's see, we can destroy 90% of the tops movement if we add these numbers and weld this thing in place.."
It's one of those things you look back on and are glad you did though in the middle of it, you're thinking about the
mistake you made ever starting this project. I would imagine I'm not the only one who has felt that way.

Thank you Mark,
It is indeed my first guitar (classic). It was all made with hand tools and it took me a loooooong time. There are many small imperfections but as you can imagine I am very proud to have reached this final stage (tomorrow I will be gluing the bridge :? ).
When it is finished I will post some pictures of the completed guitar and also some pictures of the process.

Wow! A lot of nice instruments being made - everyone seems very industrious these days!

I've been completing my first classical guitar. Couple more finish coats to go and It'll be done:

It'll be nice to finally hear it and then get it to its new owner in time for her next semester of lessons!

Cheers,
Dave F.

Finish sanding and buffing a top on the Mahogany 12 today, I'll do the back and sides in a couple of weeks. Also hanging around are a Rio 12 waiting for last coats (still have to finish return air on the spray booth), and the Cocobolo 6 string that has one coat.
Also in the background are a stack of mandolins and I will be routing some tops today. Working weekend to be sure...

Hi Hesh, latest is a guitar stand. For us who don't have basement shops the next build in the garage will wait until warmer weather.

Mine is not so clever as Bruce's.
Thanks Bruce!! Great story.
This is a smashed guitar repair. Perhaps I should call it a re build because so much of it was missing in the first place or just broken, and so much just had to be re made.
This was more of an experiment to see if i could do it.
I also had some timbers and component parts that I wanted to test out.
I had some Ironbark in the workshop. It was orginally an outdoor barbecue that I took home to make some jigs out of. When I cleaned it up I discovered that it was really strong and stable. Could this be used for back brace material??? beehive Its really cranky wood though. Some of it looks really pretty, and I'm going to try and make a bridge from it as well.
The soundboard isn't original. I made it a year ago, and it split down the centre so i reglued it and never fitted it to a guitar before now because i didn't trust it. Its been haning up in a wood closet since then. Heres an opportunity to use it and see how well that repair holds up.

I just tried something I think I read about here, I don't remember who showed it... Anyways, I had this cheap fly cutter that I didn't like using in the drill press. Slightly modified, it became a nice rosette cutter for oval holes on arch top mandolins. The wooden plug registers off the soundhole edge. The cutter must be honed really sharp to work well.

Image

Here's the finished rosette (pear wood and birch, this is for that "Norwegian Wood Mandola" I posted about earlier in this thread).

Here's what I did in the shop this evening...

Ruined a couple of perfectly good African Mahogany sides!

1st try....

Maybe it wasn't hot enough...

2nd try...

Perhaps "Hot Enough" isn't the problem...

On the positive side... my house has a really nice BBQ smell now...

Thanks

John

away....you know ~ rejects like me...the box with all the bridges, and
tailpieces and pic guards and tuning pegs and nuts that were miss cut
and me don't got the heart to heave in the garbage.
