I'm wondering if there is anything else that will work to thin Z-poxy? I was able to get some Denatured alcohol through the local drug store a few years ago and am just coming the end of my supply. I stopped in at the drug store and they are no longer able to get it for me. Now I'm looking around for somewhere in Canada to buy the stuff or something else to use for thinning my epoxy. Any suggestions??? I'm not having much success...

thanks

Josh

Any hardware and or paint store should carry DA. In fact I am supprised that a drugstore carried it as it has zero medical usage.

pure grain alcohol but I suspect that is even harder to find north of the border Hey!

Josh-
'Methyl hydrate' will do that job.
Acetone or lacquer thinner are also OK, but they tend to evaporate a bit too fast for me for most jobs.
All of these solvents are available at CanadianTire, usually.

Warming the epoxy (and the workpiece) is effective in reducing viscosity if the working time is not a problem.

A good article on thinning epoxy is at http://www.seqair.com/skunkworks/Glues/WestSystem/Thinning/Thinning.html or at the WEST/Gougeon website if you look around.

Cheers
John

Isopropyl alcohol/isopropanol is cheapest up here at the rural co-op or other places that sell supplies to the 'horsey set'. ($20/gallon)
;)

Josh,

Methyl Hydrate works great with Z-poxy and you can get it at Canadian Tire or virtually any hardware store (Rona, Home Hardware, HD,Lowes, etc...)

Thanks guys,
I actually went out to the shop after starting this thread and took a look through my thinners and chemicals. I came across an old bottle of Methyl Hydrate and thought it might work. So I mixed up some epoxy and it worked! Now I come back to a few recommendations to use Methyl Hydrate! :)

Hey Michael, I know you guys in the US must think we are crazy since you can go to any one of a dozen places to get it. Not so up here....

well, back to the shop

Josh

The liquor store down the street from me has 190 proof everclear. The drugstores carry 95% ethanol, rubbing alcohol. Must be a provincial thing. I'm in Alberta.
