So this is closer to Epiphany than Christmas, but this is what came in the mail today:

This is that unserviced kit from Shane won at the Mayes auction.
Don't let the sunshine out our window fool you--it's freezing outside.

Here's the contents, laid out in neat order. Shane added some few extra binding strips, because I like to use binding on the fretboard and as a back inlay. Also, he upgraded me to a 1-piece neck. Whoo-boy, thanks, Shane!

And that ^ is the back, Indian Laurel. Looks almost identical to Indian rosewood. It's heavy, hard, and rings like a bell. What is it with that Indian climate that produces such nice timbers as this?

Shane has assembled everything we'll need (glue and finish excepted) to produce a lovely instrument.
And...and...that Master grade Lutz is killer.

COOOOOL!! I am glad it made it safe Steve. The packaging looks hardly beat up at all!

Don't you think the laurel is denser than EIR? I haven't used it yet but certainly plan to. I think it will be awesome tonewood and I plan to get more. And thanks again for helping out with all of this.

Cold...what 40-50F. :roll: Its warmed up today starting at 4F and getting up to about 22F.

Ok, you guys got us on temps.
But I got the Indian Laurel!
And Shane, yes, first impression is that the Laurel IS denser.
Should be most interesting to work.
If you EVER get any that is curly, let me know.

I should conduct a poll: what sort of rosette do you suppose these ingredients call for?
Shane supplied 4 slices of Pomelle Bubinga veneer. (Well, c. 1/8"+ thick...veneer by old standards)
Could bookmatch them, and cut a ring.
Could cut tiles and do a radial rosette.
Could.......?

Anybody want to take a stab and offer advice?
You see the color palette in the above photos. In your mind's eye, what will look superb?
