Has anyone used red gum for acoustics or electrics? Any opinions on value for a tonewood? A guy approached me about some he removed from a house that was built in 1938. It is priced well and I will at least get some of it, I just don't know if I should stock up.

The sweet gum that grows in america is a heavy closed grain wood that takes a nice finish. And should be good for guitar building. It wouldn't need any pore filling, so that is a plus. However it is prone to movement while drying so i would laminate it for necks.I can't tell you what it's like for tone.I've never built with it.Mabey someone else can chime in there.

Thanks Mark. I had not considered using it for necks.

I've made a few things w/ red gum, but not a guitar.
The movement that Mark mentioned always gave me pause.
It's using it at that thin dimension that's worrisome.
Perhaps an electric?
