Nice little applet. It says for balsa, but it seems it shouldn't matter. I mean, density is just weight/volume, right?

Right.
But, as I asked in another thread, what is "standard" convention for luthiers??
This takes gms & inches & calcs lb/cu.ft. I calculate gms/cc. Brock uses gms/cu.in. What's everybody typically use?

That's my other hobby, indoor duration models, we use mixed measurements all the time as the weight of balsa spars and such has too many decimal places in ounces. When you build planes weighing in the range of 1 gram or less total weight the decimals become a pain. We are even more nuts than left brain guitar builders as all the parts are flex tested and weighed so to keep the completed plane weight as low as possible with acceptable strength.

Standards? [uncle]

My inclination is always to use g/cm^3 like you, since it neatly matches with specific gravity (S.G.).
I notice that Alan Carruth uses kg/m^3 which is another 'standard' density unit that gets rid of the decimals for our uses.

Then of course there's the mm vs fractional inches vs decimal inches thing......not to mention left handed and right-handed tape measures....

Cheers
John

I'm not sure of a lutherie standard, but I like that reasoning, too. pcf seems to be the standard in US forestry/lumber, so that can be helpful to follow. But g/in^3 is convenient for luthiers in the US.

Fred, Wow -- an airplane less than 1 gram.

When building with Gopherwood, I like to use shekels/per cu. cubit
