It's that time of the year again - We have -30C / -22F right now here in Edmonton...and it's supposed to get -37C/-35F this night My humidifier is running full power and I can't get the humidity higher than 29%. Luckily it's supposed to be like that only for a few days - I hope nothing get's damaged.

I would add a second humidifier, even a cheap used one for these situations. Here in Windsor we don't get that kind of cold and my furnace humidifier keeps up, but had to replace it this year due to a stripped gear in the drum turning motor. The new one is much more efficient so maybe a larger unit might be in order. I have more problems with excess humidity in the warm weather thanks to sitting between lakes Erie and St Clair.

I hang a wet towel or 2 from the ceiling when my humidifier won't keep up. You can soak it pretty good but leave the bottom 6" dry and it won't drip all over the floor. If you have a concrete floor, you can just pour some water right on the slab just before you quit work for the day.

I so envy you guys! It's starting into the "dry" time of year here too, and the lowest I've seen it get is 58% - for about a 1/2 hour one morning before it shot back up to where it normally hovers: around 70%. It should get better through Jan./Feb., but probably not a lot better. Through September and October it stayed around 80 most of the time. My shop is going to need $ignificant sealing/dehumidifying to achieve any kind of control.

im in the same boat as you. waited for the seasons to change and the humidity to drop now its about where i feel comfortable working and what did i do. tear apart the workshop to do some insulating and still haven't gotten everything back to where i want it!

Only way to handle it is enough humidifiers in the winter and enough de-humidifiers in the summer. They are both just as important as your bandsaw.

I just had to start my humidifyer since the cold weather started here last week.Mine just hit 40% so i'm keeping an eye on it as well.

Thanks guys. I was able to get humidity up to 34% now. I guess that's ok for 2-3 days of below -30C/-22F. It's supposed to get warmer in 2 days (warm as in -16C / 3F) and I'm well set up for that temperature outside.

I usually try to maintain around 40% as Edmonton is pretty dry year round - I rarely have 50% or more in my workshop during the summer, so I think I can live with 34% for two days.
