Anybody have a reasonable source for metric drill bits? 2mm to 10mm, .5 mm increments.

What I have found so far is rediculous as far as price goes!

I got some at Rockler a year or two ago for under 30 bucks if I remember correctly. They were even brad points.

I found a reasonable set at Grizzly, not brad point, and only go to 6mm in 0.1mm increments. I do not need that kind of scaling. The Rocklers are standard units (SI).

They also have a set that goes to 13mm, if you need it, for $40.

At Rockler, they sell individual HSS metric brad point drill bits, if, for example, all you really wanted was a single 10mm or 11mm for tuner holes: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10613

Yeah, some Canuk over on SMC said the same thing to me.

We cannot. Crazy, huh? And if we find them, they are expensive. Notice the shell dots that Stew-Mac sells. They are metric (many). Soooo, you can use a crossover from a bit set graduated in 64ths, but it still has a little play. Pain in butt. BTW, if you have access to bradpoint drills that go from maybe 3-4mm up to 12mm in 0.5mm increments, I would be glad to buy them from you.

Hey I'm Canadian and I have to look for metric bits most places only have them in 1 mm increments not .5 This whole metric thing is a pain. Being 61 I am too old to get interested, my brain works better in inches, but temperature in C and speed and distance while driving I can deal with. The worst part when I was working was in my trade we were using both systems. Living in a border city I get both systems thrown at me also.

Thanks Mike. I was going order a couple of the metric drill bit sets (8 drill bits) and a set of plug cutters for a little over $20, but canceled when I saw the shipping was going to be $52.

$52 for shipping a set of drill bits! That's outrageous. Are the hand delivering them or overnight delivery? There is no justification for that.

Well, I have NO idea what you did to get $52 for shipping. Try again. They do have a min order of $20. So I picked 2 of the 5 bit sets, 2 of the 8 bit sets, and one of the plug cutters (as a test to see what happened to you). Shipping came to a little over $11 (UPS ground)

Now, $11 is still high, but this was for bits I simply cannot get here. Especially the 0.5mm increments.

Please try again... and tell us what happens. I would NEVER reccomend a supplier that robbed customers with shipping!

I haven't seen a set of old fashioned imperial drill bits for about 30 years!!

A couple of weeks ago I got two sets of bits, 1-8 mm 14 bits with a bunch of 1/2mm sizes.

£1.69 a set.

that's what? $3.50?

OK, it was a crappy budget shop and the bits will break easily, but it's a lot less than $50

Why is it when someone makes a mistake on a website, then proclaims said mistake in a public forum, and then right after that posting, the OP helps to clarify said mistake, then right after that, the piling on continues? Has anybody besides me checked Alan's numbers?

Also, Alan, where do you live? Maybe, possibly, if you are outside the US, then that might explain it.

As for finding metric bits in the UK, I am not surprized they were found at a reasonable price. The USA is a different story here.

First, I am not quite the neophyte on buying from a website as you seem to think. Not sure what "mistake" I made when I gave them my address, which is in North Carolina by the way, and it tells me the shipping is $52. It didn't even offer the normal UPS shipping, but started at 3 day delivery, for $52. I'm sure that was a mistake, but don't believe it was my mistake because I still live where I told them I did. Now, just to check, I went back just now, and it skips the shipping page alltogether. When I click to select shipping method, it simply returns an error saying that I need to select a shipping method. I click on the button to select shipping method again, and get the same error.
Now when they get their website working properly and the shipping shows correctly, I'll buy from them.

I just tried it again...looks like I keep making the same mistake! Here's what I got again to ship this to NC:

Alan, Sorry! I did not mean to suggest you were a neophyte, just that some mistake was made.

Yeah, I see what you are saying, no standard UPS ground option. Could it be that you are in some rural area where UPS uses contract delivery services? My guess is no, and that you have seen the Brown truck in front of your house before. For grins, change your city to Raleigh or the like.

Then again, I know its old fashioned, but maybe pick up the phone and call them and ask them what is going on. I do agree that their site is a pain. Just getting to your cart is rediculous. Try hitting "continue shopping", but make no new additions to the cart, and then try finding the cart.

Actually, I'm not in a rural area, so that wasn't the problem. I spoke with someone there and they think that they have an error in the shipping rates for my zip code, so are going to look into it. I went ahead and placed an order wiith them and they were going to send me an email with total. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.

high guys, whenever you really can't find something like the metric bits, I wouls be glad to buy em here, and send them you, but I doubt if it's gonna be any cheap since tools normally are quite a bit more expensive in Holland than in the states. But if there's somehting that you just can;t find over there you can allways pm me.

That's really nice of you Mario. But VAT and shipping would prolly be a deal buster. The folks at drillbitwarehouse stock Dimar metrics, which are cabinet shop grade. Nice stuff. I emailed them about their website and they CALLED me to tell me they were on it. That's pretty good in my book. BTW, Dimar has a presence in Australia (maybe HQ?)

I just got tired of using crossover bits to install 7-8mm shell dots (and other things). It should not be so complicated, but SM and LMI do sell them (shell dots) in metric! Maybe SM & LMI should consider selling metric bits if they are going to sell metric accessories?

Now, if you could get me a pair of B.A.R. running shoes at a reasonable price, we can talk! Those things are awsome!
