Just out of curiosity, how do you all normally EQ an acoustic guitar in a Live performance?

Is it just me or do mids make an acoustic sound like crap.
anyone have some resources on this.
I know this is a luthier site but was just wondering

You may want to check out D-Tar and talk with Rick Turner. D-Tar has some pretty sophisticated outboard preamps with EQ, and they satisfy some big name pro players who tour with D-Tar equipment.

for what venue ??? .. small club is different from a hockey barn .....

what size guitar .. dreads/jumbos likely need bottom removed, while a 00/000 may need nothing ....

I use a Fishman Pro Eq Platinum DI with various guitars, pickups , and stuff on the other end of the signal. I just move the sliders until it sounds good. A cut in the mids is usually required but there's not magic setting. Like Tony said, different rooms, different guitars and different pickups. My favorite combo is a condensor mic (audio technica Pro 37) through my Bose T1 into whatever system is out front.

I've used the K&K mini on the last few guitars I've played along with the Pure XLR preamp. The preamp has an XLR output and will run on phantom power if it's available. I've received a lot of compliments on the sound from players and the sound guys. I keep the EQ settings at the middle and as far as I know the sound guy isn't changing anything either.

It depends on your budget as well and setup. Try to stay away from anything that says digital. All digital signal processors be it EQ' compressors, gates , verbs delays, combo units etc have ADC's and DAC's( anaolg to dig and dig to analog converters.) The analog signal must be "digitized" to take advantage of the digital algorithms that are the EQ, delay, verb etc. Most consumer/prosumer models are pretty poor quality and degrade your sound ( there are good units but the are the higher end studio pieces not really design for live applications)For most applictions analog is still king. Depending on what type of setup you have (mic? pickups? vocals?) will dictate what you need. Your sound is only as good as its weakest link. A good quality pickup/mic into a good preamp should not need much if any EQ. If you are playing through some sort of PA you should compensate for the room with the systems EQ not your guitar.

I do the Solo acoustic rock/folk thing (sometimes I pair up with a mandolin/dobro player.

I run my breedlove into a mackie 1602. the breedlove has 2 pickups. an LR baggs M1 active, and a fishman classic 4. both run to seperate channels.The Baggs pickup is paired with an LR baggs para acoustic DI/preamp. I usually set the EQ on the mackie flat. and then shape the sound with the Para DI and onboard preamp. also in my rig I use a lexicon effect processor (for a little reverb) a QSC 1800w power amp, a BBC sonic maximizer and a pair of EVsx200's. I also run a boss loop station out of an auxillary and into a free channel but that's another story. Overall, the sound is very clean. I just find myself Looking for a better acoustic sound. I seem to lose most of the "woody" sound of the guitar. I Have been told that micing is "the" only way, but in a bar or club, that's impractical due to feed back issues. I have been preforming for over 10 years and although my live sound has improved greatly, I feel I should have a much better guitar sound as I am a very versitile guitar player.
